I had a very long time with diabetes. it feels like a nightmare to me. But I was eating and reasonable treatment. I am very healthy. Urge you to really try and focus follow the doctor
I've had successful LAP-Band surgery but has NEVER been diabetic. I have a friend who has been interested in WLS and it has been recommended that she have the Gastric Bypass since she is diabetic. My friend does not like the idea of having organs cut (neither did I). She would like to have the LAP-Band surgery. I am wondering if any diabetics have had the LAP-Band and whether or not it was successful in getting rid of your diabetes or whether your diabetes has improved significantly. My friend has Type II diabetes and is no way close to stable. Thanks.
Hello. I know you posted this almost two years ago but I am in the same situation. I am a Type 1.5 diabetic and I am not completely off insulin but hoping to loose twenty more pounds and be off the fast acting and just take lantus at night. My question is how do you combat the weight gain with insulin and bypass. I feel like I am fighting an up hill battle and I am experiencing a stall in weight loss. I think it is because of the insulin. Any advice is appreciated. Congrats on all your progress. starting weight 270 current weight 188- One year post op. Goal weight 150-160.
thanks :)
ya I had my surgery 24th of june and my daily is down real good I take about 1 unit of novalog at maels as to my old days of sliding scale from 5 to 55 units per meal
I realize that this post was from a year ago, but thought some people may have the same question and check this out. My sugar was high in the hospital, but I was still told to reduce my meds when I went home. My blood sugars were still a little high for the first two weeks after surgery, but dropped considerable in weeks 3 and 4. This morning my fasting sugar108! I was averaging high high 200s and sometimes went into the high 300s just two months ago. I was on 1500 mg/day of Metformin as well as Glipizide twice a day. We stopped the glipizide immediately following surgery, and gradually decreased the Metformin. The physician's assistant wants me try to go off meds next week to see how I do.
I use a pill cutter to cut it into 4ths. I did this right from the start and was fine. You can get a pill cutter for a dollar at the dollar store, and drug stores sell them at a reasonable cost too.
With those medical conditions, I think you will get approval. I had a BMI of 36 with diabetes (uncontrolled with meds), GERD, and high blood pressure. After being tested I had mild sleep apnea that the doctor didn't think was necessary to treat. I qualified for all three procedures, and decided on the RNY.
Go to the doctor and he or she will tell you if they believe surgery is warranted. Keep us posted!
I am going through the process of having a revision from Gastric Sleeve to the DS. Having the Sleeve did not resolve my diabetes. My surgeon suggested the DS at the beginning but I was hard headed and only had the Sleeve. I have been diabetic over 25 years 20 years on insulin. I am 57 years old. I am hoping to hear from others that were in my situation that gives me hope to get off my meds. Thank you for listening...

I had sleeve surgery 11 months ago. I am on medicaid and had high blood pressure, diabetes, and sleep apnea and was approved. I was told a bmi over 35 with certain medical conditions could get approval. Those conditions usually center around heart, lungs, or diabetes. While your bmi is not over 35, you obviously have health problems that would be considered. I would suggest that you get a sleep study to determine if you have apnea (can become life threatening if left untreated). As I live in Kansas, I do not have a surgeon recommendation for you. I would suggest that you research for ones in your area that have been a Certificate of Excellence as well as the hospital they use. It helps to ensure that future problems can be avoided.
Are you still losing weight? I have elevated white blood cells.. that keeps my bg high.
