You're right that weight loss will help to control the diabetes, but controlling and potentially curing are not the same thing - but good luck to you.

Topic: Were you ever in diabetic denial?
I ask this question because for quite some time, i was in denial.  I thought i would ignore it and it would go away.  I also discovered with my Dr, it's how they talk to you and present things to you.  My old internist talked at me, this did not make me want to think about being diabetic.  I am now seeing an Endocrinologist and his interaction with me, has me realizing i need to get it together.

Do have a lap band, or are you pre-op? Is there a eason you chose the band over something that would likely inflict a greater improvement on your diabetes, such as the DS?

yes, i do have specific reasons why i did chose the band over other things.  I am keeping in mind that my success will be what i make of it. The band will be a tool to help me, and it may take more time but i'm not in a rush, my weight did not come on overnite.

I am confident getting my weight under control will be beneficial to controlling it.

Hi!  I've been using Byetta for a couple of years now.  I had nausea at first but that is gone unless I overeat.  My blood glucose is well controlled.  I watched what I ate and exercised and lost some weight; I've been maintaining the loss for about a year now.

Laney,

I do have one other ?, i was researching this online and saw some issues with people complaining it's causing issues with the pancreas (not sure of the spelling) so i was concerned about this, my dr. did tell me that nausea is a side effect but it will go away, i plan to start it, this Friday once i get paid.  My doc gave me a coupon for a free month but it's expired so I'm gonna call him to see if he has another.  I think the fact that i can drop a few pounds on this is an added benefit, but i just really need to get my sugars under control.

Type I for 12 years. 36 years old, mother of 3. I gained 100 + lbs after diagnosis. I had Lap-RNY on 11/4/09. Started @ 270# down 67# all ready.
Here are my answers----

how long from the first appt is the surgery? For me it was 10 months (I had to finish nursing my baby)
how hard is it to do the liquid diet before the surgery? No problem
how do you treat lows during that time and after the surgery?? (that's a big one for me) I started with glucose tablets, now the thought of them makes me want to gag. So I use orange juice. (I haven't dumped yet on anything)
would you say the surgery has improved ur control of diabetes? I used to use between 65-80 units of Novolog a day. Since surgery I use around or under 20 per day. So I'd say yes. My A1C before surgery was 6.9. Will be having it done again around 1/28/10.
what is recovery like? A lot easier than any of my 3 C-Sections. Back at work 10 days later.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Feel free to e-mail me.

Good Luck :)

Type I for 12 years. Pumping for the last 8.

Had Lap-RNY on Nov 4, 2009. Started @ 270#. I have lost a total of 67# all ready. My best news is I went from using 65-80 units of Novolog a day to under 20. Yes I said 20. My A1C before surgery was 6.9. I'll be going back around 1/28/10 to check where I'm at now.

Good luck to you.

I am 7 years out tfrom my surgery and 2 years ago, I was experiencing hypoglycemia episodes ..My pcp diagnosed me with type ll diabetes and hypoglycemia due to insulin resistance...My A1C numbers are great, but I feel so bad after I eat..so I recently visited an endo *****tested me with the fasting glucose test...where he tested my blood sugar and insulin levels every 10 minutes in the first hour and every 30 minutes during the last 2...test confirmed I am indeed insulin resistant...and hypoglycemia that is definitely related to my surgery...so he increased my vit A and D3..put me on a blood pressure med and I am currently tracking my readings for 6 weeks...I am also increasing my physical activity and tracking my carb intake...He particularly wanted me to be sure to eat a protein with any carb I eat...I purchased the Insulin Resistance Diet plan book which uses the "Link and Balance" system of linking proteins with carbs...I do feel a little better...my heart palpitations have lessened...I have increased my cinnamon intake...this problem has been so confusing...no one with type ll that I am acquainted with...do not absorb foods so quickly as I do...and dI really felt my surgery definitely changed the rules...so to speak...
