Topic: RE: Help?? what kind of Protein that's not sweet.
I am Type I diabetic. My dietician recommended this product for me to supplement my protein intake. There is a product called BeneProtein made by Nestle Nutrition under the "Resource" label that is tasteless, nonthickening and can be mixed into any liquid. I thought it worked very well to supplement my protein levels. You have to order it through a pharmacy here in Canada. I got a 32 serving canister of it for $22 CDN. Each provided scoop has 7g of protein, 0 g fat and 0 g carbs (about 1/2 serving of protein). Directions for use are to mix one scoop into at least 120 ml (about 1/3 cup) of most hot or cold beverages or prepared soft foods including mashed potatoes, soup, pudding, hot cereal, tea, coffee or juice. It contains Whey protein isolate and soy lecithin. You can search for the product on Nestle Nutrition's website I believe if you want more information.

Best of luck,
Wil :)

Topic: RE: Metformin (Glucophage)
Metformin is notorious for causing upset stomach issues (including gas and diarrhea) even in those who haven't had WLS. How long has it been since you switched to the metformin? I've seen many people say they get these side effects for the first few weeks, and then they go away once their body adjusts. If the issues persist, I would talk to your doc about switching you to something else. Metformin isn't the only diabetes med out there!

Topic: Insulin Dependent?
I am four weeks post op from a RNY.  My blood sugar numbers are running high, but under 200.  I am so hopeful that I can stay off insulin.  I have not seen my endocronologist yet.  Has anyone experienced that blood sugar numbers stabalize and go down post surgery?

Topic: Metformin (Glucophage)
Hi Guys, I was just wondering if any of you experienced "dumping" after switching over to Metformin.  Before RNY I had gone from Metformin to insulin because the Metformin was not working anymore.  Since surgery I have dropped 50 pounds and my PCP suggested I go back on Metformin because the insulin was causing my BS to drop too low.  Before, I was never a dumper...I could tolerate any and everything.  Since changing over, it seems like I'm very sensitive to everything that isn't protein.  I even became nauseous and sick from Green Tea yesterday.  The good news is I've finally started to loose again....but the Metformin is doing a number on my stomach.  And I cannot take the recommended dose of 500 mg 2x a day.  It causes me to have a reaction.  I'm down to only taking one a day.

Topic: RE: teens and diabetes
I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic when I was a teen. I was 16, I believe. My gyn found glucose in my urine. I wish I'd had a better medical team at the time to truly impress the seriousness of the issue, but instead, I was basically told to stop drinking regular sodas and to eat more vegetables, and an endocrinologist told me to take chromium picolinate. No one ever requested further testing to check my A1C, my fasting insulin level, nothing. I do recall having had some sort of meal tolerance test (go in, have a blood draw, go eat breakfast, come back for another blood draw 2 hours later), but I don't even remember the results, so I assume they weren't alarming. Looking back, it was all quite laughable - no wonder I ended up with full-blown type 2!

Hopefully, you have a better doc than I did. Or at least YOU have a greater understanding (no one in my family was diabetic at the time) and can work with your son through this. If it is just PRE-diabetes (which some medical professionals will disagreee even exists - you'reeither diabetic or you're not), then he's in a good position to turn things around through diet and exercise alone.

113 fasting? That's a great improvement, but not considered "normal," still "impaired." Congrats on getting off all the meds - isn't it so freeing?!

Topic: 6 months out, normal blood sugars
My blood sugar was 113 this morning, which made me post here today.  I was 6 months out Jan 14.  I was taking a boat load of meds, including 2000 mg of metformin, actos, lantus and regular insulin pre surgery.  Now I take nothing.  I've lost about 100 lbs.  I feel so much better without all those meds.
