Topic: RE: Should I try Metformin
I take Metformin and have since 4/2008. I haven't had any problems with it although I had to start out with 500 mg a day (in the morning) then increased to 1000 mg a day (morning and evening). I do take other meds with this - Januvia, Glipizide and Lantus Solostar (insulin injection). Being able to just take the Metformin would be great!
As for starting it before your surgery, I would ask the opinion of your primary care doctor or whoever is wanting to prescribe it to you. Then I would ask the surgeon's opinion.
That's just my take on it.

Topic: A little fustrated.
I had lap band on the the 3rd my surgeon gave me instructions to stop diabetic meds and only begin adding them if blood sugar started to elevate. So I got home and my BS was awesome running right at 100. then yesterday it was 115 fasting so I took a glucatrol then this morning it was 135 fasting. I don't understand the problem. Still losing weight, still doing good in full liquid diet. I have maybe 3 carb choices a day. Someone give some encouragement or insight.
Topic: RE: Bypass or Lap Band - Type 2 Diabetes
Hi all,
I am so confused. I am a type 2 diabetic - weighing in at 301 at 5'7 1/2"
I saw Dr Paul Macik today and he is suggesting the RXY as it is much more successful then the Lapband. However, he never mentioned the DS. Isn't that more dangerous? More cutting of the stomach? He told me with the RXY that there are 4 incisisions that will eventually fade.
I am so confused. Help!

Topic: RE: Anyone use Byetta?
thanks everyone, i have been using it for a few weeks now, I'm happy to report it helps control hunger quite a bit but more then that, it has really help me gain control of my blood sugars, i am reading at 180-190 which may seem high but, when i was in the 300 to upper 200 this is a great improvement for me. I have no marks or itching from giving myself the shots (thank God) and all is going well so far.
ok this is about female stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also was having lots of problems with yeast for months, i was told by my gyne that the mass production of this yeast was due to my blood sugars being so out of wack and once they were in control it would be better, keep in mind this was lasting for months, it even caused a tear, down there, the tear took over a month to heal, and the yeast was still there, but the last 3 weeks, no yeast!
I guess i was really ignorant to everything diabetes could do to the body and i was in denial for a bit, but I'm trying to be more responsible about it.
Thanks so much for the input everyone,

i suggest you do your research and make the decision that is best for you, because a wls may or may not cure diabetes, that does not mean the particular surgery is best for your body. Good luck in your decision whatever it may be.

i do not take that, it does not agree with my stomach, i take glyburide and byetta, and i do not have to stop until the day before my procedure.
Topic: Should I try Metformin
I'm scheduled for surgery on April 26th. I feel like I could benefit from Metformin, but I wonder if I should start it now, with surgery just a few months away. Did those of you who take it, have to stop it before surgery? If so, when did you start back again? My blood sugar doesn't get all that high, but I get so crabby, shaky and weak when it gets down around high normal.
Thank you!
Paula
Thank you!

Your PCP is not correct when she says that once you have diabetes, you always have it. That's what Jillybean was trying to say--the DS actually CURES Type 2 diabetes. It does this by changing the physiology of the small intestine. In the DS, the upper portion of the small bowel is bypassed, and that is the area where the insulin resistance hormones are generated. In Europe, several surgeons perform the intestinal switch portion of the DS as a CURE for Type 2 diabetes.
Take a look at these links if you are interested in understanding the science behind this cure:
http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/diabetes/3751535/If-you-are-Type-2-and-considering-WLS/ (contains links to study by Cosu, Noya et al). "Conclusions: Our long-term results suggest that in carefully selected patients suffering from serious hypercholesterolemia or type 2 diabetes with insulin reserves still at an acceptable level, and with BMI 30-40, DS without gastric resection can be proposed as a surgical treatment for metabolic diseases but not for obesity."
Also see this discussion from Dr. Husted about the difference in how the upper small bowel and lower small bowel process food differently, from a metabolic perspective:

Buchwald, H. Bariatric Surgery, A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. JAMA, October 13, 2004-Vol 292, No. 14
So if a patient's aim is to cure their Type 2 diabetes, the best surgery for doing so it the DS. That's not opinion, that's what the studies say.

Topic: RE: Anyone use Byetta?
i used it for about 1 year and a half, controlled my blood sugars and hunger, i also lost some weight, i was prediabetic and took this instead of metformin, i am currently off all diabetic medication since the surgery, hope this helps..
Topic: RE: Metformin (Glucophage)
I recently added Metphormin and I had digestion issues for about 2-3 weeks before things settled down. The doctor had warned me about that side effect. So it might not be dumping. Maybe it's just you getting used to the new medicine.
