Melting Mama (also an RNYer) has been dealing with some similar-sounding issues. Check out her blog, maybe you can find something helpful on it: www.meltingmama.net.

Topic: RE: Non Diabetic Reactive Hypoglycemia
I have this and it didn't rear it's ugly head until I was almost 2 yrs post op.
I went back to my surgeon and his only advice was to " Get back to basics" which meant nothing to me.
I met with a Diabetic Nutritionist who although I explained I was an RNY post op insisted I increase my complex carbs. I explained this was not going to work  but she  insisted this would help balance my sugar. This only made my Carb/sugar addiction worse.
After falling as low as 37 I have finally come to the conclusion that I may have to be grain-free. I have had a crash on such things as pretzels and PB crackers so it doesn't always happen after a sugary food. I also crash after fried foods which I rarely eat but I am from New England so fish and chips happens in the Summer.
If I eat a sugary item or even the wrong carb almost exactly 90 minutes later my blood sugar will tank. I do not usually feel anything out of the ordinary until I am at 60 or below.
I now carry a glucose meter and tablets everywhere I go. Exercise makes it happen faster so beware if you hike and snack.
I have not had good luck with my surgeon or nutritionist with his office so I mostly take care of it myself.

Topic: RE: Should I try Metformin
Thank you everyone!  I guess I need to make a doctor's appointment.  I tried it, and I can hardly work from having to worry about running to the bathroom.  The Byetta makes me so bloated, that I didin't think that would be good for me either.  I'm hoping to be cured after a little weight loss.  I don't even know what I have!  I have symptoms of hypoglycemia when I don't eat often, but my blood sugar isn't low.  Between 100-120, I just feel terrible.  How did you know what to do post op?  I'm worried that I'll be having hypoglycemic symptoms, but won't be able to eat or drink enough to get my blood sugar up to feel better.  Did you all have to do the glucose tablets or something similar?

Topic: HYPOGLYCEMIA

On 1/9/2007, I had a Roux-en-Y.

I've done well in terms of my weight .. after having my surgery in Jan 07, I had lost 209lbs {going from 474 to 265 in less than a year} .. however, I passed out during my shower after my morning workout in the first week of Jan 08.  This began a series of health problems that put a halt to my loss ..

After months of confusion & mis-diagnosis, I found out that I was now HYPOGLYCEMIC...

I had always had the goal of getting down to 230lbs like I did back in 1992...  At 230lbs, I had a 31 inch waist...

However, with all of my health battles that began in Jan 08 & continues into the present .. I kept battling with the same 30 lbs or so over the course of 2008 & most of 2009..  up & down .. I could never break through the 265lb mark

Last August when work got so very ugly, I made up my mind that I'M GOING TO TAKE MY LIFE BACK .. I went to my sister's birthday celebration and marked it as my last day of misbehavior...  I weighed 297lbs on that day ...

Since that day, I have lost 44 lbs .. I weighed last week at 253lbs .. I am very pleased with myself because I have taken my time and changed my behavior over the long-term .. no diets .. I simply minimize & watch what i eat & I exercise when I can .. I only weigh once in the while .. I refuse to be obssessed with the scale ...

So, I have a total loss of 221lbs so far .. check it, once I lose 237lbs, I will weigh 237lbs and I will have officially lost HALF of my starting weight of 474lbs...

Physically, I look great!  Current 36 inch waist down from a 62 inch waist.

Now, to the problem:
I am continually having complications with Hypoglycemia that my doctors have been unable to explain nor treat.  Regardless of a GOOD blood glucose level, my head is usually tired and exhausted.  I will wake in the morning & immediately feel like I have been studying for 18 hours.  My head is continually sleepy.  My body feels too exhausted to walk.  Everyday, I have to push through feeling miserable in order to have a daily life.

Doctors have drawn blood numerous times and the readings all come back as great.  They can not find anything wrong and meanwhile I am suffering!

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Well I'm not really sure. I was on a 2 week no carb pre op diet and cut my insulin in half during that week. Then in the hospital on clear liquids it stayed pretty much steady. Now that I'm home and on full liquids, I just keep checking my blood sugar alot. The highest was only about 126 and so I just took a couple of units. Hopefully, it will just disappear!

Topic: Lowering my insulin
I had my VSG on March 4th and I'm hardly using any insulin already. I'm taking 10 units of Lantus at night and have used a couple of units of Humalog here and there. I haven't taken my Metformin/Glucophage since surgery. I hope that this lasts as I add more calories and different types of foods.
