Topic: vegan?
Hi. I had RnY surgery July 2008, and my diabetes never improved. I'm back on medication (Janumet, Lantus and Novolog) and am having nasty neuropathy in my feet, lower legs and hands.

I was flipping through channels recently and caught a blip of a doctor talking about how to reverse diabetes. He says a vegan diet will do it. If it doesn't reverse it, it will at least help. He says the way to eat is 100% vegan, very low fat, and low GI.

I can't imagine not eating meat, dairy or eggs, but at this point, I need to try something new, because the status quo isn't working. Has anyone tried to eat vegan after having GBP? I'm really worried that I won't be able to get enough protein, especially since I loathe beans and am not crazy about consuming lots of soy.

I'm open to any and all opinions!

Thank you,

Melissa

Today I had my first appt with my endo since surgery. It was very exciting! Before surgery I was on 1000mg Metformin, a sliding scale of humalog with meals, and 32 u of Lantus at bedtime. High BP, high Trigs, high Cholesterol. Lots of highs and lows and feeling bad all the time. Within a week of surgery I was off everything. My bloodwork today showed my A1C is 6.3! Highest of the normal range, but still normal. And, I'm only 5 weeks out so I'm sure that the next one will be better. My cholesterol was 120, Trigs 98.

I'm so excited over these numbers. THIS is why I had my surgery. The weight loss is a definite plus, don't get me wrong.  I couldn't be happier.

I just came along you post.  I have an HA1C of 4.8 and I dont' have hypoglycemia.  My sugars are perfectly normal.  I think it depends on if you go really high and then really low, you then average out the same number as I am at with a normal number all the time.

Its not the weight loss that takes away our diabetes.  IT has to be something to do with the surgery and the way we malabsorb.  I never took another metformin pill since the night before my surgery and I hadn't lost even 1 pound yet, so it had nothing to do with my weight loss.  At 2 weeks post op, my blood sugars were normal and at 3 months out my HA1C was normal.

Topic: RE: How long it takes to get off insulin and meds?

Prior to my surgery, I was on  5 shots per day plus 500mg of metformin twice per day.

I came home only on metformin.  After a month, I was cut back to 500mg of metformin a day.

At 5 months out, I am now on no diabetes meds.

My blood sugars were still relatively high (150s to 160s) for the first two weeks after surgery - and it was because of the trauma of the actual surgery.  Like clockwork, at exactly two weeks, I was running in the 80s to 90s fasting.

Now, with no meds I average 80 to 85 fasting.

It all depends on the person though.

surgery + healing + bodily stress = can all cause insulin needs to be different. Give it some time, test often to keep track of your sugar levels. In time things should improve - for some folks its quicker than others.

There is no way of telling. It depends on how long you've had diabetes, how well (or not) controlled it was, and a little bit of just plain luck. Which procedure did you have? Do give it more time. I was on metformin for almost 6 months after my surgery, but now I'm not on anything at all.

I am a type 2 diabetic. During the Optifast (liquid) diet I had a brief moment when I didn't take any Metformin or any insulin. Today, 10 days after the surgery I take 2 grams of Metformin per day and 30 units of insulin. Am I going to become insulin and meds independent? When?

Topic: Gestational Diabetes .....
I had Gestational Diabetes with both pregnancies and it stuck around after my last baby was born last year and it made me look like a Macy's Thanksgiving day balloon because I swelled up! As a result I became Morbidly obese, thus having WLS and BAMN! The new Marilyn was born. Life is so much better now that the Diabetes is gone forever!!
