Topic: RE: Which surgery would be best for my diabetes?
Weight loss without surgery can help, and the limited dietary intake of early post-op from any procedure can help. The best results, though, statistically speaking, stand with the DS due to the metabolic shift inflicted by the intestinal reconfiguration. The DS also has the best stats for KEEPING the diabetes away long term, whereas even with the RNY, about 10% of patients whose type 2 did go into remission soon after surgery saw it return at 2+ years post-op.

Just food for thought...of course, ANY means of battling diabetes is a good choice! I just chose the option with the highest success, partially also because I'm only in my 20s, so if my diabetes goes, I want it to STAY gone!

I have Type 2 diabetes. I assumed my surgeon would want me to get RNY surgery, but he said the sleeve would be good too. I guess, it's only a small percentage of people whose diabetes is resolved from the surgery alone. The rest have to lose weight in order to improve their numbers. I'm 7 weeks out, and my fasting blood sugar has been normal for a few weeks without medication.

Topic: RE: Type 1 diabetics that have had gastric sleeve
I'm Type 2, and I have the sleeve. At first my blood sugars were running high after surgery, but about a month out, they're normal without meds. I'm not sure if it's from the weight loss, my low-carb diet, or both. But I'm quite happy with the results.

If your sugars are high, then you got to get them down. CLose your eyes, and keep throwing a dart eventually you will slip and make it in. LOL That's what I had to do the first time I ever took a shot. (i was 10 at the time)

Ok, are you drinking enough water? Do you have any sort of cold or infection? Stress in your life? Hormones? All these things effect blood sugars, thats not to mention the food and activity effects as well. Having the band will take time to loose weight, and the time to change your body's insulin requirements. With other surgeries, weight it dropped off quicker, and their system is absorbing food differently.

Ih ope you can get things figured out. Take care of yourself. Its not easy, but will be totally worth it.

Topic: RE: How long it takes to get off insulin and meds?
It may take time.  After you lose more weight maybe you'll be able to lessen your meds or maybe your diabetes will be put in remission.  Overall when you lose weight your health will get better and you will feel better.    I'm 11 months out and still take metformin and glipizide. I know my blood sugar dropped down to 84 recently - so I just need to have more bloodwork done - and maybe I will be able to drop off some more meds.

My diabetes actually got worse while I was eating a Vegan diet.  Most Vegan diets are very high in carbs which always effect my blood sugar in a bad way.

Topic: RE: Little Help?
well I am doing tiny bit better, I'm still in pain, still get lows and new symptom veins close to the skin and horrid bruising! it hurts!! I got called a hypochondriac... WTF!? I hate doctors, so if I am sick I go and I mean I really have to feel like I am on my death bed. I have two tattoos now and that says hello I can take the pain, I didn't gripe about the freaking sun burn I got and the doctor called me stupid over... well duh it was stupid spur of the moment talk for 4 hours in the sun with a new wls friend. I mean how dumb can a doctor get and still breath? I have pain meds so it's not like i want more... re-phrase I DO NOT NEED MORE MEDICATIONS!!!! So their job is to test find out and cure. My fasting sugars over night have been 100 lately, were a sugar free family. My day time between meals no snacks is 97 and my doctor said if you want to see a Endocrine doc than fine ill refure you, yes please and yet no refural. I WANT A NEW DOCTOR MARINE CORPS!!!

test when your feeling crappy too. Also if having infections that too can raise blood sugars. so test then.

Hypoglycemia can be tricky - thats when you really need to avoid the sugars, to keep things stabilized and eat regularly. I had a client that had hypo so would drink reg pepsi all the time and eat snickers bars. All that is going to do is spike the bgs and cause them to rebound lower. hope you get to feeling better

Topic: RE: Type 1 diabetics that have had gastric sleeve
I'm a type 1 and on a pump, but I had the DS, so the sleeve plus the intestinal switch.

If you're interested, I'm happy to share my experience with the DS and type 1. The short version: my last A1c was 5.8, and I have been incredibly slack about testing. The year pre-surgery, my best A1c was 7.3.

Immediately post-op, I was taking one-fifth of the insulin I had been prior to surgery. I really don't know whether the same thing would happen after a sleeve. I actually think you might do well to ask the Type 2's on the VSG board what their experience was with the diabetes meds and/or insulin immediately post-op. Did they go off meds right away, or did it happen more gradually as they lost weight? The answers will give you a clue about whether you need to really crank your pump down post-op, or have a much lower rate of IV insulin drip than your previous basal rate.

Good luck. Let me know if I can help further.

With great power (the DS!) comes great responsibility.
