Topic: RE: Diabetes again?
I'm seeing a internal medicine dr, and obgyn and I'm going to a new endocrinologist June 4th my current one is two hours away. I'm sabataging myself lately the insulin drops it low and I overdo it on sweets and then dump. I've got to get a handle on things.

I'm a midwife and all about natural - however, let me tell you, don't be afraid to use the insulin during pregnancy. Just test a lot and try to keep your blood sugars as stable as you can. The insulin is not risky to your pregnancy but high blood sugars are. What kind of doctor did you see for your preconception workup?
I am a big fan of people seeing the right kind of doctor for the things they are dealing with. I would suggest maybe seeing an endocrinologist so that you get the best treatment for the diabetes issues.
I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this again. What a huge disappointment! I am approaching WLS only because of my diabetes, and I know I will be terribly disappointed if it doesn't resolve. Frankly I don't hold out high hopes for permanent remission, but even a few years will buy me some time for my poor pancreas and help me from developing complications sooner than later.

That's an interesting medication plan. The metformin makes your body use insulin better. The insulin she is giving you to take only at night is Lantus insulin.
I take 2500 mg. metformin per day and 70 units of Lantus at night, and it works great. My PCP started me on 10 units, and it didn't do anything. Then he told me I could go up every day or every other day until I had a fasting blood sugar under 100. That happened at 70 units.
Insulin is an excellent therapy (IMO) because it helps spare the pancreas. Many other meds stimulate the pancreas to make more insulin, which only makes it burn out faster. I had to talk him into the insulin. I much prefer something that my body would make for itself if only it could make enough, to something that works in a way that is only barely understood!
Many people who are insulin resistant (most Type II) diabetics, benefit from continuing metformin even after WLS and normal blood sugar levels because it makes your body use insulin better, and helps keep whatever healthy pancreas you still have from burning out.

Sometimes I have to take a big breath, close my eyes, and blow out hard as I poke. It's really not that bad, but if you really can't do it, have someone else do it. I used to use an injectable med that really HURT to inject, and I had my husband or my (teenage) kids do it for me. I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

This is the BEST book:
The First Year: Type II Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed by Gretchen Becker.
I was able to check this out from my library. It is worth buying. It talks about how the diabetes happened, how different types of meds work, diet, lab testing, and somehow she does it in a way
that doesn't overwhelm you. I can't recommend this book enough.
Also, I found that many dieticians use very outdated ADA diet guidelines. A low carb diet along with regular exercise seems to be key. Excercise is dramatic and long lasting on blood sugar levels.

Topic: RE: Which surgery would be best for my diabetes?
Which NC surgeon does DS? I'm just being lazy, but I'm new to the area. I have been wanting the sleeve and I still do, but am positive that I will have a big fight on my hands to get BC/BS to approve it. Considering that fighting the insurance company could give me a stroke - is it worth it? I was going to use money from selling my house for the surgery and go to Mexico - but the darned thing won't sell! I feel so stuck. And diabetes is my real reason for doing surgery. I went to a seminar tonight and the doctor said that RNY does a better job resolving diabetes than the sleeve, but the research I have seen doesn't agree with his opinion. Very confused. And I'm almost positive BC/BS won't pay for DS.

Wow this same thing just happened to us!!! Thats actually why I was on this board instead of my normal VSG forum...My husband had labs drawn at the dr. cuz he wasnt feeling very well and his fasting sugar was 294 and A1c was 11.7...we just found out yesterday. I too am looking for good resources because I haven't had to deal with this either. Good luck with this and let me know if you find any resources.
Its such a huge lifestyle change & he's not the one who has been planning that but I have surgery July 12 so no time like the present for us to change as a family.

That's good to hear! Maybe you should also stick to a healthy diet. And don't forget to exercise daily. Cheers!

You should consult a dietitian teamed up with your surgeon to discuss about your diet. Best way is share in making decisions.
