Topic: POST WLS & NEURAPOTHY PAIN - IMPROVE???
Hi. I am due to have my surgery two weeks from today, that is if the nurses in the Twin Cities don't strike again. I was supposed to have my surgery on the 8th and was cancelled. Anywho, I have very serious pain from diabetic neuropathy and Fibromyalgia. Sometimes it is difficult to differentiate one from the other. However, I was wondering if any of you had severe pain in your feet, shoulders, hips, knees, hands and if your pain improved much after WLS. I am VERY curious about this and am so hoping that I will feel better. Every day has been hell for a while now. So much pain and so exhausting. Help!!!

Topic: RE: any kidney transplant patients have wls surgery yet? if so what type ?
I HAVE ATTENDED THE 24 WEEKS CLASSES AFTER BEING PRE APPROVED . IM ALMOST 2 I/2 YEARS POST SURGERY TRANSPLANT, AND I WILL BE MEETING WITH THE SURGEON IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS. I WAS TOLD ITS A CASE BY CASE BASIS. ALSO DEPENDING ON THE PATIENTS HEALTH HISTORY......WHAT ELSE DO YOU KNOW?

Hmmmm. At our informational meeting they told us that if you have ever experienced a transplant or had an organ failure in the past (pancreas excluded) that you likely wouldn't be allowed to have the surgery.
I could have heard that wrong. Have you been approved?

Topic: RE: Type 1 Diabetic going to have RNY
I am a T1 (10 years) and a pumper (9 Years) with CGMS (2 months). My endo has also put me in for WLS. I am on a military base and this will all be done there. My endo seems very comfortable with me getting the surgery. The bariatric clinic seems confident that they can do this on me but keep insisting that I will 'no longer have diabetes'. That's so cute... but really people - my pancreas is DEAD! (rolling my eyes)
Anyhow I can get lapband, RNY or the sleeve. I'm thinking the sleeve will be best because it absorbs more and seems to be the surgery of choice for t1s on this forum.
I've been lurking for awhile and am around if you have any questions. Right now I"m still in the pre-planning stage. I go to my big 4 hour appointment next week where they look through my medical records and tell me what all they need turned in for me to be put on the surgery schedule.
As with any hospital stuff I think the diabetes will be up to the patient to monitor for the most part. When I had my son my doctor was less than helpful and the nursing staff post c-section were laughable. Luckily with the pump you can make changes quickly. Pack lots of strips and keep good records.

they attempted to have me go off the pump about day 2 post op, that lasted about 6 hours. JOKE!! I didn't want too but I played along. They then agreed to put the pump back on.
I went from using 130-140 units daily to about 30 post op. Now at 10 mos post I can eat a bit more so I use about 40-45. Thats pretty amazing to me.
I lowered my basal rate during surgery to last most of the day (was already lowered but even more so for surgical time) they monitored me, and could watch my sensor on the pump.
It got bumpy but all the kinks worked out just fine. You know what is best for you.. If pumping is it then I say stick with it and have them work with youl. But thats my 2cents.

my surgeon just referred to my pcp who is internal medicine when it came to the diabetes. and we already worked out basal plans before hand and that worked great for me.
as for the pre op diet, just lowered my basal half way thru the 10 days.. turned out after a bit didnt need the basal as much as I needed before.

Hi Stacy,
I came to this section today looking for some answers. I am having RNY in 12 days. I have been on Optifast for the last 9 days. I did not know I was a diabetic. But, four days ago my eyes went completely blurry. Just woke up like you and everything was blurry. Now, this did happen to me about a year ago and I took allergy medicine and it went away. So, I tried the same thing this time but not working.
This morning I saw my doctor. My blood sugars are very high. I forget the differences between farsighted and nearsighted but I do have to push stuff away to focus on it at all but that still doesn't always work. I have never had to really wear glasses except ffor some reading and computer work.
I am confused as to why being on Optifast my blood sugars would spike. I would think it would be the opposite. Anyways, it sounds like the same thing you went through. I am very scared right now. Twelve days before surgery and I find out I am diabetic??? Geeze

New to this forum. I am Type 1 x 29 yrs with pump x 15 yrs. My plan is to have VSG beginning of August. Staring all the pre-reqs. I think this will be safer than RNY and more effective than band. My endo agrees. I asked her about starting levemir (long acting) rather than pump right before and for a while after surgery. She felt continuing pump would be better just will need to pay attention to decreasing basal rate. Bolusing is no real problem. If you are true Type 1 you will never be totally off insulin but hopefully will decrease it. Just going to take some playing around ( & that's part of why I got to be this size in the first place
)--I'm not too concerned about this. And if the loss is slower, ok, as long as I lose steadily. (of course, I want it instantly gone, sigh..). I was a surgical RN and I know that during surgery it's the CRNA/anesthesiologist that has to deal with the blood sugars/insulin monitoring. This is my bigger worry than post op monitoring. Let us know if you learn more.

Topic: RE: Type 1 diabetics that have had gastric sleeve
I'm three weeks out from having the sleeve done.
I am off the pump and taking one injection of Lantus a day.
I love being free from my pump.
I do have Novalog on hand if I need it.
My endocrinologist sent very specific instructions to the hospital for my post surgery care, they of course followed their own protocols.
So my only advice is to have your endocrinologist talk to your surgeon.
Good luck!

Topic: RE: Which surgery would be best for my diabetes?
I know I am just a few days post op but I have to chime in here. DS is a great surgery and has awesome effects on type 2 diabetes. However you all seem to be neglecting that with RNY one significant crteria is location of the "Y" and resulting amount of the small intestine that is bypassed. When you take this into account you can see that those Docs that bypass the greatest amout are having the largest success with diabetes control/remission. I only found this information through my own DOC and his team. This type of RNY has amazing success numbers and much lower failure rate unless the patient does not do his part. As for me on the 3rd of June I was maxed out on meformin and 8 a.m I underwent RNY and have not taken another diabetes med. Fingers are crossed that it is done forever.
