I just had my lap band removed and now waiting for a gastric sleeve. My dr said he doesn't even do bands any more because he's removed a lot of them. They don't help with the diabetes and 40 pounds is all I ever lost. Im not afraid
I was / am type 2 diabetic - before RNY I was taking 2000 MG of Metforin a day 4 glipizide tablets and 120 units of insulin per day. My fasting blood sugars were in the high 200s and 300s.
Since about week 2 post surgery I have been off everything but 1000 mg of metforin a day with blood sugar readings between 100 and 130.
I am glad I had the surgery!
I have had type 1 since I was 3. I am now 40. I had RNY 3.5 years ago. I started the pump 2 years ago. My A1C is lower and I feel better. Weight has not changed. I love the pump. I went with the omnipod as it is tubeless. Message me if you have any questions.

I'm T2, so I can't really contribute anything useful to the questions that you asked, but I wanted to ask a question. Before my surgery, my doc had me on a couple of different types of insulin that weren't supposed to contribute (as much) to weight gain; Levemir, Victoza, Bydureon etc. Can T1s not take these? If not, they should really work on something similar for you guys.
Good luck! I hope you find a way to balance sugar levels and your weight.
((Hugs))
I know this is a late reply. It's much harder to bring down blood sugar than it is to lose weight.
In 2014 I was losing weight and my blood sugar remained high for several weeks while I was
on a liver detox program which involved supplements, hydrotherapy, Epsom salts baths, and
elimination of grains, dairy, white sugar, potatoes, and citrus foods. I was allowed to have
1 cup of rice or buckwheat per day. I did not have WLS, I am considering that now. The program
worked very well on me. The only thing that is a hard program to keep up with, but I will try
again. My blood sugars did not drop immediately even though I felt better. Blood sugars
did drop over time. They came back up even worse now, because again that is a hard program
to follow with the elimination of my favorite foods: dairy and sugar.
I was placed on insulin but only took it two nights b/c of how it was making me feel (sort of racy). I go back tomorrow to try something else
my original Dr. did say that with RNY, He would be by-passing the part of the stomach that would be causing the diabetes. In my earlier post when I said I'll be re-evaluated for something else, I'm meaning for some other blood sugar medication. I just don't want to be on any of it.
Well my surgeon told me that something happens with the deuodenum and the hormones it releases during digestion, and bypassing it would put my diabetes in remission. He's been doing RNY for 30+ years.. So I had to trust in him. I initially went in for the sleeve and I am SO glad I went the other route!!
Your reply is a god send to me. I was told by the nurse that I would be super skinny if I went that route. I know that having RNY would be better for diabetes, and it really should be my only concern right now. She really stressed me out by saying that. I'm so happy to hear that someone has gotten control of their diabetes. I told my Dr. maybe the sleeve, but I will discuss it again with him in 2 weeks. BTW I was put on insulin last week and only took it 2 nights. I felt as if it made me feel a little racy. I will be re-evaluated this week for something else.
