Huh. I don't understand this doc's advice either, but being a Type 1 for 30 years and trying to decide between RNY and VSG, both ketosis AND ketoacidosis make me very nervous! How dangerous is ketosis or is it something that is inevitable with WLS? Mannn....having Type 1 makes me so nervous doing this because of all of the ketoacidosis stories I've read. This is why I'm leaning toward the sleeve. Yikes though. Can't help but worry...surgeon's deal mostly with Type 2. I am really looking forward to my appt on Oct 7 to meet directly with my surgeon.

Topic: Type 1 for 30 years -- RNY or sleeve?
Hi all. I was diagnosed when I was 5 with Type 1 diabetes, and though I've changed types of insulin a few times, I've stuck with injections my whole life. I experience GREAT insulin resistance, and am a very brittle diabetic. Sometimes I don't feel the lows until I'm in the 40's. I'm really nervous about the dumping with RNY and treating lows, though I know that only like 30% of RNYers dump, it still makes me nervous. I had my New Patient Ed day at the weightloss clinic and my first NUT visit. Everything I hear as far as pamphlets, videos, and staff...it's like they are all pushing the RNY. I haven't had a chance to talk to my surgeon one on one yet, but made an appt with him on Oct 7, followed by NUT visit, 2 out of 3. Surgery could be in Nov according to the NUT and I feel that I'm pulled back and forth as far as which surgery to have. My insurance covers all 3. From what I read on here and the research I've done it seems like the VSG is the obvious choice, but everyone keeps pushing the RNY at the WL clinic. Obviously talking directly to the surgeon will make things clearer, I'm hoping at least, but I just would like to know the opinions of other Type 1ers out there I guess. I worry about leaks a lot with the VSG since that seems to keep coming up at the WL Center. Would love to hear your stories! Thanks a lot!

Topic: RE: question about type 2, insulin levels and teens
There is a cpeptide test that they can do to show how much insulin is being produced. Typically an 8% drop in weight is enough to reduce needs for medication.

Your son should have his hba1c tested. not just a fasting bg. Tell the doctor that your other child is diabetic, and need to monitor his sugars as well.

As mom, I would be making sure that the stuff is bad for blood sugars and health are no longer on the menu or available from 'cafe home' there has been a lot of protest about this at my house but I know I'm not loving them by buying crap so not any more.

just offering suggestions

Topic: question about type 2, insulin levels and teens
on monday my 18 year old was diagnosed with type 2. she was diagnosed with insulin resistance 1 1/2 - 2 years ago. when she was diagnosed I R, no one said anything about changing her diet or losing any weight. she was put on 1000 mg metformin 2x a day. 2 -3 months ago, they added byetta and still no mention of her weight or diet. when she went to the endo on monday, they said her insulin levels have dropped dramatically but are still too high and her A1C was 6.2. the dr gave her no guidance, just said "schedule with the diabetes center and lose some weight". they said her weight is high enough that with the new diagnosis of type 2 and her PCOS she would probably qualify for wls. i know that she is not ready to take that step.
she doesnt quite get it yet that her weight is making her sick. my question is .... i also have a 14 year old son who has had some borderline fasting sugars, is it too soon to get his insulin levels checked or have i screwed up and need to have done it before now? also he is on a psyche med that has made him gain about 40# in the last 6 months but we are now trying to wean him off of it.

I am having this problem with my 15 year old daugher :(   she has been diabetic since she was 10 and she is just getting worse and worse at taking care of it.  I have constantly be on her or she just doesn't do it, It is so aggravating for me as a parent because I know she is damaging herself.  I just don't know what to do.  When did you start to mature and take it seriously??

Topic: RE: teens and diabetes
My daughter was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at age 10 , she is now 15, and it has been a big big struggle the last 5 years getting her to take care of herself :(  I know many many children with it that do well, my daughter just does not happen to be one of them.  She is on the pump . If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them.  I am an insulin dependent diabetic myself for 11 years now.

I would say if you ate a six inch subway bun and your sugar only got to 190 you are not to bad off .........YET.   If I  were to eat that and not take my insulin my sugars would be in the 400's. If you are having surgery or have had surgery (i dont know which you are) for weight loss then your sugars should most likely normalize fairly easily being that you are not to bad yet and have not had it very long.  And yes stress WILL make your sugar go higher, or sometimes even drop, I have had both happen due to stress before.  I wish you all the best.
