Topic: RE: Type 1 for 30 years -- RNY or sleeve?
Lisa,

I did consider VSG, but opted for the band last time. This time after reading the research and speaking with a lot of different RNY'ers, I'm convinced that this is the way to go.  I meet people every day that have had the surgery and now look fantastic. Whats more they feel great, some diabetic, some not.

I think it has to do with the malabsorptive part of this procedure as to what helps diabetics. At this point, I just don't want anything restrictive when I swallow and don't want to throw up every day anymore! Yuck!

I actually had some fluid removed from my band today to prevent the throwing up. I was able to eat a normal meal....small piece of chicken and 2 tiny meatballs for dinner. Finally! It felt good.

So did you ever think about getting the sleeve? I wonder if you would gain it all back with the sleeve like you did the band. Hmmm...that is something to think about. I see just great results from the VSG board, but I keep hearing how RNY just does something amazing for diabetics, that I'm not really grasping too much...why or how I mean. Is it the malabsorption that is the key here? Not absorbing the fat or what? There are just so many darn things to look into!

That is a big reason why I don't want the band...worrying about things getting stuck, as well as having to keep going back and getting a fill, AND that banders don't usually lose as much.

Best of luck with your revision. How disappointing it must have been to have gone through all of the steps to surgery and getting the surgery, etc, etc for it not to work for you. I have a feeling that you will have a lot better luck with RNY. Thanks for sharing your story!

Hy Cybil;

ok, so you converted from gestational to type II and now type I, insulin dependent. The difference used to mean that as a type II your pancreas made some insulin, but as a type I, it didn't make any insulin, so surgery or not, your body would still need the isulin just to maintain a normal level. Your needs may or may not be coming from the food that you eat....depends on how much your pancreas doesn't work, basically.

I've been diabetic for 32 years and have hopes of taking less insulin after surgery, just as I do now having had band surgery about a year ago, but I know that I will never be completely off insulin.

I have a pump, set with specific basal rates and pump insulin for meals or snacks. This should continue after surgery, but my requirements should lessen since I won't be eating as much. As the weight drops, my basal rates will drop as well.

Hope that helps a little.

ok...I have been diabetic for 32 years, diagnosed at age 12. Last year, 9/24/09 I had surgery for Realize Band. I lost approximately 24 pounds.  Here's the kicker. I've gained it all back. I can lose weight with the band if I don't eat. If I stick to protein shakes, cottage cheese, yogurt, oatmeal and sugar-free pudding, I'm fine. The minute I add in regular food....chicken, beef, pork, veggies, and minimal carbs,  I gain weight.  I tested this over the last 4 weeks. I did two weeks on the protein and foods listed above and lost 7 pounds. Then slowly added in regular food and guess what...the weight all back on. Grrrr......

I am now going through insurance approval for RNY. I have a lot of insulin resistance. With the band, this didn't change a whole lot. With RNY, I am told that it will. There will be a metabolic specialist at the hospital that will see me after surgery and I am told that my insulin requirements will be greatly diminished.

The thing that I hated most about the band was that feeling of having to throw up. I wasn't eating anything that was not on my diet, just couldn't eat most things...hamburger meat, turkery burgers, meatballs....all things I should be fine eating, came right back up.  It took me a year of fooling around with this band, but now I feel like I am on the right track with RNY.

Topic: RE: Anybody on Victoza
Just started on Victoza last week. So far, lots of nausea. It has taken my appetite totally away! I have lost 2 pounds per day since starting it. It was my endo that put me on this. My surgeon wants me to eat 1000 calories a day. There is no way as long as I am taking Victoza! Not sure how he will respond so we will see. As far as my sugars, I have still been having to take some fast acting insulin when I eat. I guess my body is just not ready to do its thing yet. I will keep patiently taking Victoza and waiting.

I feel for your daughter!  I Have PCOS and am T2dm.  From my years of experience, the very best things your daughter and you can do are:  EXERCISE..... ALOT!,
EAT LOW CARB,  EXERCISE!
If she wants babies someday, this will be the only way (short of RNY).  We all have challenges in life and this will be hers.

It is Amazing how the medical community seems to just throw pills at a problem.
So many things can be corrected by lifestyle changes.  In Defense of Doctors, however, they have learned that most people will not change their ways so they do what they can...ie pills.

I learned alot going to the diabetic classes.  I would HIGHLY recommend them.

Prayers are with your family.

Topic: RE: How many people have had their diabetes go away after WLS?
I am 6 months out had complete bypass (RNY). Was diabetic for 12 years, Insulin dependent, and various other meds, for cholestrol, blood pressure, thyroid ect...I was 284lbs @ 5'7".  Controlled with my meds, woke up from surgery in the 253 range and have had increasing sugars ever since.
Never once did I come of all my meds. Was off pills for a month, then put back on all of them. I have lost 78lbs so far, can eat ok, nothing makes me throw up, but no matter what, unless I go back on insulin and risk re-gaining my 78lb loss, my sugars are uncontrolled and somedays are so high, my vision is blurry. I consider the surgery a waste of money and a complete failure for me. In my case it seems to have done absolutely nothing for any of my health issues. Not even a 78lb loss has helped my health issues? I was very realistic, now I am completely in shock and extremely disappointed.Yes, it can happen, and it happened to me.

Even with my weight far below my goal and very low carb intact, I would be in the 400's without medicines.  It is just something about my pancreas.  I was sure that the surgery would work for me.  My surgeon was 100% sure too.  Sometimes I know that the doctors think I am doing some type of secret eating, but that it not the case.

There is no way to tell 100% if you will need to be treated with medicines after surgery.  There are people who weigh over 400 pounds and have never controlled their blood sugars who are perfect the day after surgery.  And there are people who get down to normal weight, don't eat carbs, get lots of exercise and still need medicines to controls their diabetes after surgery.

There is an extremely good change that you will not need any medicines after surgery, but no guarantees.

My doctor told me that he takes bets on who will be "cured" of diabetes after surgery and he is not always right.
