Topic: RE: Type 1 for 30 years -- RNY or sleeve?
Hi Missy! Thanks for writing! This is definitely a pattern I am seeing with Type 1 diabetics and weightloss just by restriction. A huge reason why I am leaning toward the RNY now. I was interested in the DS too, but my surgeon doesn't do it, insurance doesn't cover it, I would have to go to Minnesota. That is how I decided in the beginning I wanted the sleeve, because it was the first part of the DS. But possibly the 2nd portion of the DS is what really helps diabetics, which is comparable to the rerouting portion of the RNY, I believe, as far as helping diabetics/insulin resistance, etc.

only introduce complex carbs, low glycemic and should do good
Topic: 8 days into preop liquid protein fast and low bs
Before the preop fast began, my meds for diabetes were as follows...Longacting Insulin 46 u am & pm (92 u total) Shortacting 20u per meal (60 u total) Metformin 2000mg, Januvia 100mg
amaryl 8 mg.
Today, I have not used any insulin, stopped my amaryl and my fasting blood sugar was 75 this am! CRAZY!!! Normal morning blood sugar with all meds on board typically was 170 or higher.
The highest blood sugar today was 150.
It is pretty obvious that carbs and my body do not mix well. I have cut my blood pressure med in half also.
I am happy but cautious and wondering what will happen when I begin eating a few carbs again. I have to say it is a wonderful beginning and I am feeling healthier already.
God is Good and I am Thankful!

Hi Kim,
I have a similar problem. Here is an article that you might be interested in
http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa043690 There is a condition that gastric bypass patients can experience where the lows are frequent and very serious. I was a type 2 diabetic who after 3 years has no high blood sugar readings but my low readings are very frightening. I am a Canadian so my lows are 2.1 to 2.6 range. The symptoms are the as you've described.
This occurs between 1.5 and 2 hours after a normal meal. I never go anywhere without glucose tablets and/or portable protein.

Jill, that makes so much sense. Twenty years of the pills did burn out my pancreas and then had to take insulin. Then it felt like everything I ate turned to fat. Going immediately to insulin would save the pancreas.
Thanks for the great list of low carb meal ideas.

Topic: RE: 9 weeks out/diabetes still in full force
Just a thought, it may take alittle more time and weight loss before your pancreas kicks in . The more you weight and the longer you have had diabetes (on Insulin as well): you need to be well under 200, atleast 180 Lb before some people have sucess....I think the suggestion to eat as low carbs as possible is a good idea but make sure it is enough for healthy brain function. Be gentle with yourself, even reducing the amount of insulin you use is better for your body. They healthier you get the better you can combat the side effects of diabetes. All is not lost just detoured and slowed down alittle but you have still done an amazing thing improving your health. Congrats!

With being on insulin for 10 years, chances are the pancreas has "given" up. It gets used to having the insulin given and doesn't make as much. Ok, doesn't sound scientific, but it happens.
The pump is always the way to go. But that's my personal opinion. I've been pumping for 12 years - been type 1 for 25, My only regret was not going on the pump sooner!
To me, the pump fits the prescription to the person, instead of the person being fitted to the prescription.
