Topic: RE: Struggling with Blood sugar levels
You sound like me! Glad to know I''m not alone. The main reason I had this surgery was to hopefully get my blood sugar levels under control....NO SUCH LUCK! After surgery my levels were 200 or more.....WTH? so they gave me insulin.
Once I got home my levels were 170 or higher....on full liquids!
In the purred stage my levels rose to over 200! I remain on insulin cause my diabetes doc doesn't want me on pills just yet.
And protein drinks YUCK! I keep trying different ones and have yet to find one that I like. I'm scared my hair will fall out cause i only average about 30grams a day from my protein drinks.
I'm pray that both of our blood sugar levels will level out and be that of a normal person. Keep your head up! It has to get better.

Topic: RE: diabetes meds besides metformin
I was on metformin and gradually the diarrhea came. I was also on other medications. I tried adding fibre to my diet and yogurt. Since I'm lactose intolerant that just made things worse. After a year I said I can't take it anymore. The doc stopped the metformin first. The very next day things were back to normal. I had forgotten what normal was. There are many different diabetic oral meds to take. Your mom should have a good talk with her doctor.
Topic: RE: 1 week RNY post op with a question
I had my RNY 7/2009. I've been a type 2 diabetic 17 years, graduating to insulin - humalog and lantus. I was taking industrial strength doses of both. The more insulin, the more weight gain, the higher bs, the more insulin, etc. Prior to surgery, during the pre-surgery diet, the surgeon cut my insulin almost in half. I was shocked, but survived with no problems. After surgery they cut it some more. I'm now 18 months out and I'm only on 20 units of lantus a day with a 5.1 A1C. When my sugars start to go low again, I try cutting back about 5 units, letting my PCP know. So far so good. I've got 27# to reach goal. I'm hoping I'll be off insulin by then. This is not a cure-all for diabetes but a much better way to manage it. One little poke each morning and then I'm free for the rest of the day to enjoy life. I can't complain.
Topic: RE: Struggling with Blood sugar levels
I hated protein powders. So instead of mixing them into 8oz or more of milk or water I made my own shots. 1 scoop of protein into 2 oz of water. wisk up good and chugg down.
Personally I would so much prefer to so my basal rates via pump vs lantus any time. Yeah, there was quite a bit of adjusting early out for me. I ran with a higher bg target on my pump, that helped me from over correcting for carbs and corrections. Talk to your endo and see what s/he thinks about that.
Stalls will come and go. think of the loss as swiss cheese, first you drop the holes, and things have to compress down and will drop holes again. Fear of failing was a big thing of mine. Just one moment at a time.
Good Luck

Topic: RE: Neuropathy
My sugars are running great, nothing over 135 in the last 4 weeks, I am officially off ALL my diabetes medications, they are just monitoring me, but the neuropathy is still bad, I take a quarter of a 100mg of morphine about every other day. I know that my exercising is not helping it much, but its the lesser of the evils I guess.
Topic: RE: Neuropathy
I don't have anything to add just wanted to wish you both the best. I know someone that struggle with neuropathy and I know it's a very hard thing to deal with. I sure hope it improves for both of you!
Topic: In the hospital...
Well, right at about 6 weeks Post Op, I was taking way less inuslin (Type 1). Things were going great...til I started my period for the first time post op....my sugars tanked. I was waking up in the 40's. I had no energy and felt terrible. I saw my PCP and she cut my Lantus in half (down to 7 from 15). The very next day I woke up in the 240's. I faxed my doc on Monday all of my numbers. I even called later that day to make sure the fax was received and I was told that it was. She never called me back. I tried calling on Tuesday and was told she was with a patient and she would call me back , which she never did. Well on Wednesday, I drove myself to the ER. They weren't overly concerned because my bs was "only" 230. However, after bloodwork it was determined I was in DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis). They then decided to admit me. I've had tons of fluids (my electrolites were very low) and am finally starting to feel like myself again. My blood sugar this morning was 101.
The Endo that I talked to this morning said she believes I wound up here b/c of: 1. "a lack of insulin on board" (dr cut insulin too much too quickly) 2. body is essentially in a state of starvation right now during inital weight loss phase which was producing ketones. She also said that sometimes (typically at 6 weeks out) people's insulin dosages change...for whatever realson. She said they speculate that it's hormones in the belly.
ANYWAY, she is trying to set me up with an Endo at UNC who is a Type I Diabetic himself AND worked in the Duke Bariatric clinic for 2 years. He sounds like he would be the perfect doctor for me! I hope it works out! I am also hoping a doctor will happen by shortly that might spring me! I am feeling so much better and would like to get outta here! :)

Topic: Struggling with Blood sugar levels
I was so hoping that I wouldnt have to go back on my Insulin pump but I had to. Dec 2 i went back on the pump as I wasnt able to control my blood sugars with just Lantus. Last Sunday I woke up to the paramedics at my house. The kids had to call them as my blood sugar was 38 and I was out of it. I had been waking up with my sugars that low and had been adjusting my Basal rates, but that morning I just was out of it, My Endo said we have to just keep monitoring my levels and see what is going to work for me. Besides my blood sugars I am also at a stall for my weight loss. With trying to correct the lows and etc,. I can hardly get in enough protein and water. I was doing pretty good for awhile and now things are just kinda crazy. I had posted a few times that I cant stand the protein drinks and have given it time and try them again and I just dont like them. Oh the life of a Diabetic and WLS patient. Always fun. I just want to succeed at my weight loss and improve my overall health. Like others I am afraid that I wont lose the weight and fail at this too.....

Topic: RE: nervous for upcoming surgery
Is there a reason you're opting for the RNY instead of the DS? The RNY does work for many type 2s, but not always in the long term; the DS has the highest type 2 resolution rate, including long term. If you have your reasons, then that's great - just want to make sure you've researched all your options :)
