Topic: Just off Insulin, advice please.
Lost 80 pounds over 10 months with a vsg.  120 units insulin, day before operation.

Now off insulin for one week, just on 500 mg Metformin, 3 x daily.  Measuring blood sugars 2 hours after meals, so far I'm ranging between 7.2 and 10.2.  On Atkins with minimal carbohydrate intake.

Obviously we may have to add some other medication into the mix, but how am I doing so far, and any advice for me?  Many thanks!

Topic: Something I've Experienced -- BODY pH and Insulin Resistance
I've been struggling for months with cravings, blood sugar levels and was put back on insulin.
COnversation with Chiropractor led us to a discussino on body pH and Insulin resistance.  I confirmed with my WLS nut.... yes, there can be a connection between acidic pH and insulin resistance.

OK, so I examined what I have been eating/drinking....coffee (decaf) and splenda are two of the most acidic foods the body can consume. I've been living off decaf and splenda since my RNY!!!!
Well, I stopped the coffee and splenda... swapped if for herbal, natural teas and stevia.

I was taken off insulin right before Christmas.  Blood sugars are ranging between 90 and 120!

Coffe of any type (reg or decaf) and black teas are highly acidic.

and, alot of my 'head hunger' has vanished!!!!

Just wanted to share.... check with your NUT before any major changes.

Thanks everyone. I have again been trying unflavored whey with a half banana and milk. Sometimes it is ok and other times I still want to gag. I am trying really hard to get 1 or 2 protein drinks a day in. Ugh. I now have my insulin leveled out I think as I have not had any lows in awhile. Was scary for awhile and I think my kids feel better too

It will probably not change it as Neuropathy is nerve damage but it should cut back on any increased damage. Good luck

As a RNY and diabetic patient, I sympathize with you. Despite losing weight and exercising, my A1C is still over the acceptable range. My doctor put me on glipizide which immediately caused a slight weight gain...I begged and he took me off.

i love protein shakes however, you must be creative. my favorite protein powder now is lean dessert chocolate fudge. i mix one scoop with 6 oz unsweetened soy milk, 1/4 piece of frozen banana, 6 ice cubes, a bit of ground flaxseed or chia seed or meal, a sprinkle of powdered peanut butter. put in blender, starting on a low speed and work up to a high speed...this makes a large, thick and delicious shake, full of protein and fiber!

let me know how it works out for you.

Topic: Atkins or Low-Carb Curious?
Hi everybody!

New Group! -- http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/atkins/

We will be discussing low-carb / high-protein / Paleolithic / high-fat / Atkins eating programs!

Several OH members have posted questions or comments about the Atkins program, and also about high-protein, or low carb, or high-fat dieting.  Some people are interested in trying it to lose weight, or to refine their weight-loss, or just get carb cravings or blood-sugar under control.

This new group will provide information and support for those who would like to try this way of eating.

Even though I had WLS three years ago, and am thoroughly pleased with my Roux-en-Y, it has become necessary to get my sugary-foods cravings under control.  I still dump like a Mack truck, but have found other carbs slipping unhealthfully into my eating, and dearly wish to lose a little more weight.

So -- I'm "doing" Atkins again (it was effective for me in the past).  If you are also researching this way of eating, come give the new group a shot!

Any takers?
Interested in low-carb nutrition?  Thinking of trying Atkins? Want to try high-fat and/or high-protein eating?  Whether or not you have had (or are thinking about) WLS   http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/atkins/

I hope that you get the Endo from UNC. Definitely sounds like a doctor who will know what's going on.

Keep trying different protein powders. Order samples from anyone who will send them (About Time, Syntrax Nectar, Vitalady.com, etc.). I promise they don't all taste horrible  :)
