I was stuck waiting for an appointment today and starting reading the WebMD magazine.  They had an article about a scientist whose one-year old baby had Type 1 diabetes.  That baby is going to college now and his father has developed an artificial pancreas that may be on the market by 2017 or 2018.  It is called the iLet and works with an iPhone to regulate insulin and glucose much more simply and easier than a pump.

Thank you.

Are you a T1D? How did your blood sugars do after surgery?

For type 1 people out there: I had another experience that effected my blood sugar (I'm not saying it's going to happen to you).

Even when I had "control back" (no more 30's or 400's), I still couldn't get my sugars under 170.  I could take 9 units at 200 and 90 minutes later I was 190.  An hour after that I was 200.

All of a sudden my "block" broke through around 2PM on day 3.  I now have no issues.  My endocrinologist told me it's common after surgery to go through this because of the trama to the body.  No one prepared me for it.

Bring your own insulin and hide it.  The hospitals don't allow you to medicate your self while you're there.  Make sure it's all over your file that you are type 1, even though it probably won't matter.  Discuss pump adjustments with your endocrinologist way before!

I know.  I had several times that they wanted to give me 2 or 3 units.  I just took it and added on my own.  Who wrote the text book that they are using.

You hit the nail on the head.  The odds of someone with Type one having this surgery is small.  I told everyone that my biggest fear wasn't the surgery.  It was them assuming I was type 2.

Im glad you took your own pen.  I wish I did.  They wanted to give me 2 units of lantus at bedtime!  Before opti I was on 40 units and during opti I was on 20 units.  Not sure how 2 units was suggested!!!!  After much arguing I found out I was the first type 1 the hospital had operated on.
