Diabetic Issues - Any Advice
Hi All,
I had my gastric bypass 8 months ago. I have lost 93 pounds so far, which I am thrilled about, but compared to other WLS patients, my weight loss seems so slow. I am diabetic and still have diabetes, however it is very much improved. My blood sugar is a bit high in the am, around 150. I use to take 4 shots of insulin per day and now I only take one Metformin with dinner. I experience more lows then highs. Does slower weight loss have to do with being diabetic? What am I doing wrong? I also feel quite hungry at times and this feeling started a couple months ago. I feel like I am going backwards. I saw my doctor last month and she didn't seem concerned.
I am just worried as I am still in the "obese" category and really need to lose about 50 more pounds and to lose desparately.
Any advice on diet, food selection or anything would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your help.
Karen
Hi Karen,
I just wanted to say, its normal for your weight to stabalize at this point of 8-12 months PO......you're able to eat more. You sounded like me, I lost the bulk of my weight at 8 months PO also, then only 15-20 lbs in the next four months. You also have to remember that everyone loses weight differently, as we aren't created the same (emotionally or metabolism...lol) Please do yourself a favor and do NOT compare yourself to someone elses weightloss....you'll drive yourself insane! Please nuture yourself, eat healthy and exercise. Remember, calories in vs. calories out.
Continued success......93 lbs is awesome......when else did you lose over 90 lbs in 8 months?! Keep focused on health and eating right and it'll all fall into place.
Take care,
Wendy

Karen,
You are doing great! I was not a rapid loser at any point. I am down to 171# from a pre op weight of 316 a little over 2 yr ago. personally I would like to get down to 160# but I have no complaints. No diabetes symptoms so far. My knees are less painful and I have energy!!!!! Do not compare yourself negatively to others. Too many people mentally beat themselves up with unrealistic expectations. This is a lifestyle not a race.
Wishing you some peace of mind and joy along this journey.
Laurie
You are doing great!! I was a slow steady loser too. I lost 95 lbs and quit for a year. Now that I try to exercise/walk more I had my plastic surgery and lost another 5 lbs for a total of 100lbs.
For me, I try not to eat much carbohydrate--especially limit bread and pasta. I probably get in a total of 100 to 150 grams of carbs a day spread out over 5 meals/snacks. I try to eat protein first even though I am 2 years out. It fills me up and keeps my tummy happy.
You have come a long way baby! Keep up the good work. Your body will thank you for a long time.

Hi Karen,
I am new here and haven't had WLS yet. I want to suggest that you see an endocrinologist and have C-peptide test. This will tell you if how much insulin your pancreas is producing. If your pancreas is producing very little to none, then you are a type 1 diabetic rather than type 2. If that is the case the endocrinologist would probably change your insulin regimin and take you off of the metformin.
I had a PCP who tried to tell me that I couldn't be type 1 because of my weight. She put me on glucophage and the wrong insulin and I was having horrible lows and highs. A friend suggested I see an endo to have a C-peptide test done. I did that and the results confirmed that I was type 1. I no longer see that PCP.
