First time poster...... Got my labs done Monday for my surgery that is scheduled for april 5th. I got a call friday to inform me that im a type 2 and that i needed to go see my primary doctor ASAP and that i needed to get my levels under control and that in my condition (suger 280,A1C 9.3) there was no way they would operate on me and its looking like my surgery would have to be rescheduled. Got to my doctor friday afternoon and she put me on some meds and gave me a meter and all supplies to watch my suger and also a log sheet which im to fax over to her daily starting monday. Question...do you think that if i can get the suger down to normal that they would continue with the surgery or will they require that the hemiglobin be normal which i believe is a 3 month number

Hi Troy, I'm Type II diabetic also, have been for about 10 years. I haven't had my wls yet either. My bs have been controlled with Actos and insulin. My A1C has been around 6.8 to 6.1 which is a little high but not excessive. Your daily readings of blood sugar will tell you how much you need to regulate your medicine...your A1C is a 3 month average of your blood sugars. I wouldn't think that you would have to wait three months to get your blood sugar stable. You would be wise to attend a diabetic seminar which will introduce you to a good diet routine. (Low carbs and high protein). I wish you luck on gaining control of your blood sugars...at least it is something that can usually be controlled by monitoring your bs. I've been told that after wls, many diabetics can get off of their meds completely once they start losing weight. I'm hoping that is the case with me. Hang in there...you'll do fine. Jan

They will probably want to do another A1c on you in another couple of months. They want this to be under 7 so you've got a bit to go. But don't worry it can be done. When I started my A1c was a 14! Now it's 6. I'm 11 weeks post-op and doing great. I am off my oral meds for diabetes but still have to take insulin injections (but much less than before). Good luck to you!

Hi, I guess that every doctor is different. I was told to try and get mine down to at least 250. My A1c was 8 something. I did get it down to 250 the day of surgery and that was fine. Now I am not on any meds for diabetes. And my sugar is normal. To soon yet to have an A1c since I just had surgery Jan 31.

Hi Troy, Welcome to the wonderful world of Diabetes. I was dx type 2 May 05. It scared me so bad that I immediately started dieting and exercising. So far I'm down 100 pounds The good news is, once I started losing weight, my blood sugar came back down to normal ranges fairly quickly. My A1C was 10.2 when first dx. My latest is now 4.3. But I have to watch it. I must limit my carbs to 75 grams per day. I would like to recommended two things to you. I would get the book Low Carb Dieting for Dummies. It has a great plan for teaching a diabetic how to eat. This is not Atkins. It is a diet of fruits, vegtables, lean meats and whole grain. It changed my lift. Second listed below is the path for a great web site where you can learn a lot about diabetes. http://chat.joslin.harvard.edu:8080/~diabetes Good luck, hopefully you can have your surgery soon.
