Hi Gail I am a type II diabetic and have been on an insulin pump for about 5-6 years. I used Humalog insulin with about 75 - 100 units a day as basal and anywhere from 75-100 units for bolus. I removed the pump the night before surgery (12/16/05) and after surgery I was on a sliding scale of Regular insulin. I used 2 units for a sugar of 120-150. I used very little during the month after surgery, since I was only drinking slimfast 3x a day and other non-caloric liquids. I started soft high protein foods and have not had any insulin since 01/11/06. My Jan 31st A1C was 5.6 ! I am so pleased to not be using insulin. My lowest sugar was 86 and my highest has been 119. As long as I am below 120, I consider that a good thing. Every endocrinologist has their own thoughts on insulin or not. I was very scared about what would happen, since I was dependent on insuling for so long. If you aren't really eating much, or any carbs, your sugar should stay failry normal. I would also think it depends on how tight of a control you have now, before surgery. My A1C was 6.1-6.3 before surgery, so I was in very tight control. Let me know if you have any other questions. Since surgery, I have lost 65 lbs and am not quite 3 months post op - that will be next Friday 03/10 Stephanie [email protected]

Hi Gail, My name is Elizabeth and I am also a type 1 pumper! I am considering the RNY and am also very concerned about hypos. I am glad to see that there are other type 1s out there having WLS so we can support each other on the issues that are unique to us. Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth.... I am so thrilled you replied. I just read your first journal and so agree about the type I'ers are rare so far.... hope this is not a sign. I am at the stage of since I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea .... I am on the C-pac at night (continuous pressured air device) Next Thursday I go back to my follow up after being on the machine for six weeks and soon I hope he will give me the OK to do the surgery. My advice... this sleep apnea thing.....was really the only thing that slowed up the whole process.... I have done two sleep studies and been on the machine for six weeks... let's just say I started this journey in Feb...hoping for a mid March Operation and now I am hoping for a late June or early July operation. So see the pulmologists first after your first consulation and get that rolling as quickly as possible ... if you don't have it then it shouldn't take that much time. My email addresses are [email protected] ... I use IM there as well. I also use gatorgailtom for an aol IM address. I am so thrilled to have another pumper on board... you are more than welcome to ride my shirt coat tails on this adventure.... I wish I had one!!! Also I am on the Minimed Guardian RT.... which is a continuous blood glucose monitoring system. That gives me a reading every five mintues. Minimed just also got approved by the FDA the very first insulin pump that will have this guardian rt as a part of it.... you will have two insertion sites going on but it is worth it. I will give you more details if you interested in it. It's an awsome breakthrough. Let me know more bout yourself... email me directly though if you don't want it "out" there on the forum. Thanks for replying!!! Gail
