Had the Ds Nov 9th. Dr stopped two of my meds when i left the hospital. Those were glucophage or Metformin and Starlix. I have been tracking my blood sugars several times a day. they were getting better and better. finally i had a few lower than usual so i stopped the last diabetes medication, Avandia, and i am continueing to have excellent blood sugar readings. So happy. Thelma

Congratulations, its a great feeling to get off meds. I'm Type 1, but know the joy of lowering my insulin, and getting off some other meds. Its a wonderful journey. Continued success and hope you have a Healthy and Happy New Year! Wendy 3/15/04 278/188/150

Hi Shelly, You can look forward to getting off of medications after the surgery. Keep your eye on the positive side of things. I have a daughter living in Bowmanville, Ontario. She has given me some complaints about the medical system there. Glad you are able to go out of Canada for your care. One of the most serious post op complications is blood clots that form in the legs and move to lungs or other places. That is preventable. My surgeon required me to have a greenfield filter put in to protect against that possibility. It is a very simple procedure to put it in. You can find info on the filter by way of google. Good luck. Hope you don't have to wait too long for your surgery. Thelma

Hi Thelma, Your daughter is right. The medical system here in Ontario is in real trouble. Things are at a crisis point for sure, and it will really take some doing to correct all the damage. I mentioned the greenfield filter to my surgeon, but he didn't want to put it in. He said the data isn't clear on them and he doesn't believe they are worth the risks. I disagree with him, but with the way things are here with the medical system, I didn't feel that I could change surgeons that easily. Since I have already been approved for the surgery by(OHIP) our provincial health insurer, I was afraid to rock the boat with them by asking to change doctors. I heard yesterday that OHIP is thinking about de-listing WLS surgeries, and people were asking for signatures for a petition to get them to keep paying for it. I don't want to get caught up in that mess and then end up not being able to get the surgery at all. I see the surgeon again on Jan 27, so I will post what he says about when the surgery will be. I have to lose thirty pounds before he will operate, so I am really trying hard to do that. I don't have a scale, so I really don't know where I am at with that, but I am hoping that by staying on the eating plan I am making good progress. Thanks for reminding me to stay positive. I have to keep an eye on that for sure because I tend to get all anxious about all of this. It has been stressful to jump through so many hoops, but I know in my heart that this chance at a new and better life is worth it all. Take gentle care. Shelley C.

Good for you Thelma. I seem to be going in the opposite direction. My sugar was 224 this morning!! And it has been in the normal range. So had to take some insulin. I do go see dr/nut Thursday so hopefully I can figure out what is going on. I even exercised last night!! Sue
