Any tricks to lower fasting levels? (It's long)
Hi all.
I've not had WLS yet. I have a high BMI of almost 60 and Insurance issues have caused a delay. I have changed insurance companies and hopefully, as of January, 2006 I can start the process over again (thrills) and see if I can get approved this time. I have Type II Diabetes and PCOS. I've been taking oral meds for type II for over 5 years. Anyway, I've been on a "fairly restrictive food plan" medically supervised and of course, I'm not losing lots of weight because of Blood sugars, insulin resistance, pcos, medications etc. But I am at least losing, so I'm not complaining about the rate at which I'm losing. I'm keeping meals and snacks to about 800 calories per day - poultry/fish/green vegs and some fruits. SF Jello and Apple slices sprinkled with splenda and cinamon have been my friend. No bread, sugar, starches at all. After the first week the doc took me off Actos. After the second week she lowered my dose of prandin, which I take before each meal. My glucose readings are beautiful from noon until bedtime. I sometimes have low readings a couple hours after dinner. My morning fasting level is always above 150. I exercise every day. I swim 30 laps and do other aquatic exercises for at least one and a half hours each morning. The exercising brings my sugar levels down a good 30 points but I would love to find a way to wake with a decent reading. Any ideas on what I can do to help out my fasting levels? I've heard having a late nite snack might help. I don't know if that's true and I wouldn't know what type of snack to have. The Doc. says she can start me on some new med. (injections) just at bedtime, but this entire quest is to get off meds, and since I've never had to resort to insulin before, I'd hate to start now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Laurel
Hi Laurel,
I also struggel with keeping my morning sugars low. In my case my liver puts out sugar during the night and that is why I go up in the am. My endo moved my evening meds to a later time and that helped. I now am rarely above 140 in the am but if I wake up say at 2am and test I will be around 80.....go figure
