Low blood sugar question
I am 10 months post RNY I am about 10 pounds from my goal. My problem is low blood sugars several times a day. I am eating every 2-3 hours and it does not seem to matter what I eat my sugars are low again in about 2 hours or so. I have tried milk, protien bars, juice even a cookie or something with sugar in it. I dump on anything with more than 8 grams of sugar so am limited there. I have tried eating more carbs like pasta but can only eat about 1/4 cup so my levels spike then drop in an hour or so. I am getting reallly frustrated. It is a struggle just to keep my sugars at 80 and they are frequently dropping to 55-60 range. I usually only get really cold when they drop to around 75 but any lower I get really shaky. I would appreciate any input. I forgot to mention that I was on 100 units of insulin when I had my RNY last December I have been off all meds since the end of December last year, so there are no meds involved to cause this. Thanks in advance.

Hi Michelle,
Have you tried glucose tablets? There are many name brands and off brands and they are inexpensive. I use these when I get low and they are fairly quick-acting; within 15 mins. They come in many flavors and you can chew them or just let them 'melt' in your mouth, like candy.
Also, have you been tested for hypo-glycemia? Even people that are not considered diabetic are diagnosed with having low blood sugar throughout the day. I would ask your doctor ASAP. The two of you can figure out what you need. I would not ignore this too long as you could continue to get low more often. Good luck!
my best friend is a bottle of glucose tablets.....they 4 grams of carbs so you shouldn't dump on them. I have several bouts of low sugar and sometimes have to eat 4-8 at a time......I'm 1 1/2 yrs post op but have been doing that since the beginning.
Good luck, hope you find something that works, mini meals every 2 hrs should do the trick. Do a google search on hypoglecema (sp?) because I've heard reports that its very common in gastric bypass patients....different digestion and malabsorption issues most likely the cause.

I have never been diabetic, but I was having this problem last month (about 9 months out from RNY). My blood sugar fell to 47 and I almost passed out! My doctor told me to STOP carbs and focus on proteins, which sounded strange to me. He explained that when you eat carbs your body has to produce more glucose and then it has to fall down....or something like that.
Bottom line is that it worked for me. I will still have fruit occaisionally, but no pasta, bread, potatoes, crackers, etc. No more low blood sugar!
