I am among the few that had the WLS to help with major co-morbid illnesses including Diabeties. I had less than the required 100 pounds to loose but I had very unstable type 2 and a history of heart problems. Pre surgery I had a Hc1 over 13 on a regular basis. alonsg with the beginning of major organ failuers.... My MD had been on my case about having WLS for over three years before I said I would check it out. I have a few family members that had WLS and did not do very well ( this was 3-4 years ago, when WLS was still young) Well having lost close to 70 pounds ( with about 15 left to go) My HcI is now 6.7! NORMAL AT LAST. ( one year out) I had been on 125 lantus a night. ......now 0 Humalog 150 total a day .................now 9 -- 15 NPH....then 0 ................now 15 in the AM Avandia -- 20 ( plus 24 pound weight gain!) .........now 0 I am still insulin resistant but not as bad as before. My kidneys and eyes still show some damage as does my autonomatic nervous system...... But so far no further damage. I know others are completely OFF meds...... but I am happy with this progress.

Thats wonderful! I too am a diabetic and for years i was on 110plus units of insulin a day. if my doc would have told me i could be off insulin losing weight i would have believed him. but since my surgery i havent needed any. I was a true carboholic. my A1C is normal and im so grateful that my health has so much improved since last year. your doing great! All the Best! Tracey

SO OK MY MD thought I wa doing so wellthat she suggested I stop the insulin and try an oral med. AMARYL.... She had wanted me to take SYMLIN but because I do not eat 250 caloires or 30 grams Cars per meal, I couldn't take it. I have been on Amrly ofr a few weeks now and my weight has been going up. It took me forever to get past 140 and the lowest I was . was 132..... Now I am back at 140 for the past three days. My goal had been 120. I am doing everything according to the plan..Diet, exersize and vitamins, water and protien. I am even using www.fitday.com and write down everything I eat and do so I keep honest. At most I am averaging 850 cals a day. The only real differance in the change in insulin to AMARYL! I have been in tears a lot today. I hope that when I see my MD on Monday she will agree to putting me back on the insulin, or have other suggestions. I HATE THIS! Lisa

Read the insert that came with your medication. I take Avandia and have taken actos. They both cause retension of water. This adds to weight, but are not fat lbs. Soon you maybe off of all the medications. Don't stress yourself out over this. Consider the various options with your doctor and make a logical decision about what is best for now. You are doing a good job keeping track of your calories, etc. You will be successful, just turn the emotions down a little. No use beating yourself up over a simple side effct of medicaltion. Best wishes, Thelma

Stop crying and talk to your doctor (endocrinologist). My last 35 POUNDS of weight gain was from Avandia; so take your body's response seriously. This is a side effect and when you struggle with metabolic syndrome you have to be a partner with the drs., not just a patient. There are many diabetes drugs; and this is all trial and error -- just stay willing to find your own solution with them. Good luck and don't be afraid, Carol
