What was your a1c before WLS?

Hi all... this is my first post :)

I am a type 2 diabetic and am hoping to have RNY some time soon!  I have heard lots of conflicting stories regarding a1c and how low it needs to be in order to have surgery.  My endo explained to me that when your numbers are too high, your body is in "fight mode" and wouldn't tolerate surgery as well as it should if the numbers were good.  This is the last clearance I need in order to be approved for my surgery so I am hoping and praying that my numbers improved from my last labs.  I had them done again a couple days ago and I'm waiting for the results.  Did your surgeon give you a specific number that it needed to be prior to surgery?

Hi, I haven't had surgery yet either, but my A1C was 11.1  six months ago. my PCP put me on a new pill (well, she actually added) another pill and I saw her today and my A1C is now 9.3. I plan to have surgery soon.

That's a great improvement, do you mind me asking what new pill was added?

Sorry I can't help with the number you need to reach, but I was 6.3-6.5 for the past 2 years while going through all of the tests in preparation for my surgery. Had my follow up visit with my PCP today & my A1c was 5.9 at 10 days after my RNY. I see my surgeon on the 5th, and my PCP again on the 13th - I'll try to remember to let you know if my number changes. I had been told WLS wipes out diabetes so I'm hoping it's true.

At the hospital were I am, your A1C needs to be below 8.8 to be approved for surgery.

Thanks for the info - my endocrinologist said they usually like to see it under 8 but I'm not sure if the hospital has different rules.

Hi ya. I'm 6 weeks out from surgery. I just had my a1c taken and it came back normal. My dr is so impressed. He said if it's the same in my next review I'll come off all medication. I'm so excited.

My surgeon required a number below 7.0. You would not be scheduled until you got to that point. I was sitting at about an 8.4, so it took a few months to get that number under control.

At my 6 month post-op blood draw, my A1C was 5.4. I don't have any numbers from between those two dates.

I had serious complications and healing issues from having hidradenitis surgery in the past with a >10 A1C. The surgeon who did that said it usually takes someone 6 weeks to heal. Took me over 8 months and an extra surgery, so I can appreciate my new surgeon requiring a more normal A1C.
