Hi I am afro american women 49 5'6 197 bmi of 31.2, been a diabetic since I was 27 started meds at age 30. Had the lab band in 2003 had it removed in 2011 only lost lost 30 then the doc plicated my stomach did not lose any weight, still between 200-197 my A1c is 7.6 fasting varies. Now I am on Byderuron injection once a week and gliperide, and low dose BP pill, I also read that Black women lose kore slowly and that RY surgery has a better success rate. Please need uour advice I am scared hut I hsve to get my diabetes in control.
I just had my RNY surgery on 3/26 and am off all my diabetes meds completely. I was taking bydureon, actos, metformin, and had come off glipizide before surgery. My motivation for getting this procedure was to get the diabetes under better control. They say no guarantees but I decided it was worth the chance. I am not a black woman, so I cannot comment on the rate of weight loss. I am so happy I did this and would recommend to others. You need to do your research and understand how the procedure can change your life. I wish you luck with your decision.
Hi, I am afro American women 5'4" 212lbs and Type 2 diabetes + other health issues(Bp.cholest), I began my journey in April and now I'm waiting on my approval. The gastric bypass was suggested by my endocrinologist and I have been doing research and ready to began a life change to be healthy to be here for my kids. I am on novolog and levemir pens as well as metform plus more pills. I'm really insulin resistance. For me, this is the best option. I go to a weight loss center that walks me through the whole process on how to be successful after surgery. I am nervous to have the surgery but I see this as the best option to improve my quality of life and be here for the family. I think you should continue to research the process and decide what is important to you. Also if you can join a weight loss center that has surgical/non surgical options. That way all options are explained and you can make your own informed decision of what is right for you. Don't give up! Let me know how it goes for you.
Hi, I am type 2 LT diabetic too who had the RNYGB for diabetes control on Jan 29/14. I had a BMI before surgery of 30 and am now down to 22. My diabetes had severe IR and I am pleased to tell you that I am off all insulin now, just on 1500mg of Metformin, and 8Mg of Coversyl. I was on 550 units of insulin a day prior to the surgery. I have to say this has been a miracle as far as diabetes for me! It comes with a price for me though, I have some really weird symptoms now that none of the specialists have been able to figure out as to why or what they are, or how to treat them. It is kinda a give and take with this one for me. I would recommend you do lots of research, have tons of support, have a good doctor and team (in hospital and at home), and be a really positive person before undertaking it. I had really no options left, I had trialed everything out there and this was kinda a last resort. I wish anyone going for it, GOOD LUCK and stay POSITIVE.
Hi, our stats are nearly the same. I'm sorry about just now seeing your post, but I'm looking into weight loss surgery again myself. I had the lap band in '09 and had it removed Aug.'2014. I'm 5'2 with a BMI of 39. I'm diabetic and had terrible reflux with the band, therefore, I need RNY and like you, I'm scared! I need to get control and fast. Let me know if you have had surgery or still looking. Also, is the Byderuron injection helping?
