restarting metformin... nausea help

So, I have not been the most compliant diabetic in the last several months.  Now that I am having a sleeve done in March, I am trying to lower my blood sugar as much as possible.  I figure any surgery is likely to go better if my sugar isn't running high.

I kinda expected to have nausea when I started taking the metformin again, but that raises a question:  how am I going to be able to handle taking metformin after surgery if I can't even eat anything solid for the first three weeks?

Maybe I won't have to take it anymore... but my PCP acted like she expected me to need meds until I get close to my goal weight, and even then maybe just cutting them back.

Any experience with this?

You probably won't take any pills that can't be crushed or liquified in the early weeks. I didn't start back on metformin for about 6 weeks or more. Remember everything is liquid in the early days.

Good luck!

My surgeon said that no met after surgery at all. So hopefully it will be the same for you. If you do have to take it - definitely crushed and with your liquid meals - probably with a protein shake would be better. I was never nauseated when I started to take it and I take it with or without meals, whenever really. It has not had any adverse side effects so far. I was kind of hoping for some loss of appetite.. well that went away after a week or so...
But hopefully after the surgery you won't need it.

Hello

I am 4 weeks post op and I still had to take my metaformin after surgery even though my sugars came down, though they did take me of the Diamacron I was taking. You have to crush the
metaformin and it tastes wonderful!

Thanks

God Bless You, Moonglo!  You are very nervous right now but excited as well. Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life!  It is the best thing I ever did for myself. I was diabetic on loads of insulin with blood sugars of 200 to 579 in any given week. I was praying to get rid of diabetes forever, as some WLS winners do. It was not to be...exactly. But I did turn in 'gallons' of insulin in pens and needles for two Metformin pills a day.  I still take these two pills after almost 4 years. But no more insulin. A1C is 6.1 and this month BS has been consistently under 100. Perhaps you will be one who is totally finished with diabetes, perhaps not.  I pray you will at least be able to reduce your meds and maybe get rid of them entirely when your weight is gone. If you do have to do Metformin again, be sure to ask your doctor what you can do to ease the side effects of metformin. He/She sould be able to help.  Lyn
