So I went to a new doc in order to get my lap band I had to have a family doc... she did some basic tests on me and called me with in a few hours and told me I have type 2.. ...    I am done with all my pre tests with the Surgery Doc and now wonder what is ahead of my with diabetes and getting my lap band.. I am 5'4 and 220 pounds.... I have yet to start my pill med for diabetes for more reasons then one.. One being the side affects are a mile long and the other being that i am in denial.

I have a appt with my surgery doc on aug 31 and the last time i talked to him he said i should be ready to go with a date next time I see him....

Anyone have any advice or have type 2 and get lap band???

My advice would be to get the DS instead. It has the highest resolution rate of any surgery for type 2 diabetes; the band has the LOWEST. Even the VSG has better diabetes stats than the band.

Go ahead and work with your doctor and take your meds. You should know that there are horrible side affects from uncontrolled diabetes.
A lot of times type 2 diabetes can be improved by weight loss, but not always.
That is why I had the duodenal switch wls--immediately after the surgery my blood sugar was in control and I am no longer diabetic.
Good luck with your surgery and I hope it helps with the diabetes.

How long did it take for your levels to go to normal? I just found out I was "pre diabetic" but my sugar was 132. I have had to eliminate simple carbs from my diet and focus on protein, veggies and very little whole grain type carbs (pretty much like after WLS). I had some chocolate today and almost passed out at work!

Anyway, I know VSG will eventually eliminate this problem (hopefully 100%) but I wondered how long it would take.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I was fully diabetic and before surgery I was having trouble controlling my blood sugar below 200.
In the hospital after surgery, they gave me some insulin to control it for the first 3 days, but not my normal pills I had been on.
A week after I was out of the hospital it was only 116.
over a couple weeks it went down to 104 and there is stays--with no pills.
They probably want to give you metformin and that doesn't have any bad side affects.

Metformin does have side effects for many people, especially gastrointestinal distress (usually diarrhea and some cramping). Sometimes, it only lasts for the first couple weeks, but some folks have it long term and can't continue the metformin.

I have type II and am having a VSG in October.  I've been taking metformin for a year, I don't have any trouble with it.  With exercise and eating/drinking better, my A1c is around 5.5, but I have peripheral neuropathy and I'm terrified of foot problems and amputation!
