post-op med changes

I've been approved for RnY, and about to set a date.  How soon post-op did your diabetes meds change?  Is it a gradual weaning process or were you off meds right away?

I was on liquid metformin after surgery and didn't take any of my januvia or actos at all. When my liquid metformin was gone, in about two weeks I quit taking any diabetic medication. I don't take any at all now, nor do I take any cholesteral meds. My blood sugar was 90/60 last time it was checked, my liver enzymes are normal, and they were very elevated.

I'm glad your RNY has been approved. Follow the plan to the letter, and you'll feel better than you have in a long, long time. Congratulations to you. This was the best decision I have ever made.

Thanks, Sue.  I just got my date (5/23) and I'm very excited.  My diabetes meds change about every three months, and I'm looking forward to something that has a better track record.  The weight loss is going to be a side benefit (80 lbs or so), but getting off wome of the 14 pills plus injections daily is going to be great.

Getting of meds was why I had the surgery also.  It will help your liver, and your blood pressure also.  My BP is 90/60 and my liver enzymes are all normal now.  It's a wonderful feeling, you'll love the new feelings.

I'm just a week out. Prior to surgery I was on metformin, glimeperide, and Lantus. When I left the hospital, the docs told me not to take any more metformin or glimeperide. I'm on a half dose of my Lantus and a sliding scale of humulin. So far my blood sugars have improved. I only have to take the humulin once a day. I'm hoping with weight loss I'll be able to get off the shots. Good luck on your surgery.

Thanks, cytomama and congrats!  I'm on metformin, glimeperide, actos, victoza and lantus, and consider it a good day when I can keep sugars under 150 pp.  I eat high protein, low carb, and the protein racks up the calories. Looking for some big changes after surgery.

I was the support person when my wife when through RnY almost 7 years ago.,  The first few months were the most difficult with trying to learn what her body could tolerate and could not.

Good luck to you!

i had my RNY surgery on 5/4 and with my meds before surgery i was doing great blood sugar wise - like waking up with 90 and going to 70 before lunch - i was using 40 mgs of lantus plus alot of oral meds.  So i was much surprised and dismayed to find my blood sugar for the past few days post surger has been as high as 240 and has never gone below 198.  I haven't taken glucophage since the surgery but have now gone back to my other oral meds plus 10 units or so of regular insulin.  afraid to take to mu*****ase it does go low, but so far that has't happened.  i'll be contacting my doctor on monday - hopefully this is a short term problem??  alas, i've had this nasty disease for 20 years.  but it wuold be nice if it helped with the diabetes.  it was good to read the other posts to see i'm not alone with this.

Thanks for the post, Mary.  Hopefully this is temporary, and as your body adjusts your sugars will head in the right direction.  I'm going into this with my eyes open, and I know that there cases when things don't go exactly to plan.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!
