So this is my first time to post here but I have been reading the forums and I love that everyone is so supportive of each other. I really just wanted to get some thoughts from people about VSG and their diabetes. I have been going back and forth between VSG and bypass during the last 6 months and my waiting period is at its end as soon as I go to my next weight management meeting which is this week and I still cant decide which is right. I am leaning toward VSG because I don't like the thought of nutritional deficits and having my internal anatomy rearranged. I  am 28 and have been diabetic for 4 years and my HW 257/ CW 243. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have the bypass, and have no probs with it, never did.... but YOU are YOU .... :)
YOU must find out for yoursefl... don't jump in .... talk and talk with both camps,... ask all the questions you can possibly think about, some may sound silly but you must ask them, this is YOUR body, and your time..   go to meetings, where you can meet others that had either, and ask away.   this is very personal, and this is your time. so go to it!

I agree. Research...research...research. I had the VSG and the doctor was confident that my diabetes would be resolved within 3 months of surgery. I'm off one of my meds and my fasting sugars are holding...they aren't too bad but not where I want them yet.  I'm hoping they will come down. Some with VSG have almost immediate resolution.

There are people on the boards for both surgeries that have had success.  But this is a very personal decision and one you must weigh carefully. I believe my research indicated about the same results for both RNY and VSG and I liked the idea of the ghrelin hormone being removed with the VSG.  But, I also know the DS has a fantastic success rate for diabetes. I just wasn't willing to have my intestines re-routed yet. It is an option to revise to that though if my diabetes doesn't resolve itself. The VSG is really just the first stage of the DS. So, I wanted to try this first in the hopes I would be succesful.

Best wishes to you in your decision! I know I struggled with this as well.

I had the vsg just over a year ago, I was on insulin and 18 tablets...  Took ten months and 80-ish pounds lost before I came off insulin, but now on 3 tablets and off insulin for nearly 3 months.  I'll never be 'cured' of the diabetes, but as long as I stay away from refined carbohydrates I should stay off insulin, hoping to get offeven more tablets as I continue to lose weight.  My dream would be to be a diet-controlled diabetic.  Life is very good!
