Before RnY  I was a diabetic for over 20 years - the diabetes went down for  a short while, and now it is back.  Anyone else like this?  I must tell you, it is not as bad as it used to be, i am at goal weight, and it is stil there :( BUT at times,

I know that diabetes is known as a progressive disease... more often than not, it will get worse over time. By having gastric bypass, you have greatly minimized potential future complications or at least delayed them for a significant period of time. You even said that even though your diabetes improved for a short while, it is not as bad as it used to be. This is a VICTORY for you.

Keep in mind that those with long term diabetes have progressed much further in the disease than someone who has only had it for a few years. When you hear the statistics about diabetes being totally resolved with RNY, more often than not it is for patients who have had diabetes for under 5 years. Again, you are experiencing success because your diabetes is not as bad as it was previously.

My dad has had Type 2 diabetes for 15 years and is on max doses of oral medications. The doctor told him his next step is going to be insulin. I did some research (I also used to be a pharmaceutical rep) and came across some studies that talked about the most researched herb in the world and how it was helping people lower glucose levels. They have put this herb in coffee and tea. Since my dad was a coffee drinker, I got some for him to see if it would help. The information on the coffee says it is not meant to treat, cure, or diagnose but I can tell you what it did for my dad. His fasting glucose averaged 150-175 and his 2 hour post-prandial (after eating) gluscose ranged from 250-300 (depending on what he ate). After drinking this coffee for a month, his fasting now avereages 85-100 (usually closer to the 85 range) and his 2 hour post prandial ranges from 110-125. Again, this was after a month. This might be something worth looking into. Here is the website where you can get more info.

Congratulations on your success and be sure to keep eating healthy and exercising!

Be blessed!

I had RNY in 3/2008. I was a diabetic for 14 years at that point. The diabetes never went away but I was only taking 2  units of insulin after surgery which over time just increased. I had tests run by my endocrine about 1 1/2 years ago, and found out that I had type 1 diabetes instead of type 2, devastating. Took a little while to get over it. I did lose 150 lbs though. My diabetes is still uncontrolled even though I hardly eat anything and constantly check blood sugars, see my endocrine etc. It isnt easy, thats for sure.
