Lost 80 pounds over 10 months with a vsg.  120 units insulin, day before operation.

Now off insulin for one week, just on 500 mg Metformin, 3 x daily.  Measuring blood sugars 2 hours after meals, so far I'm ranging between 7.2 and 10.2.  On Atkins with minimal carbohydrate intake.

Obviously we may have to add some other medication into the mix, but how am I doing so far, and any advice for me?  Many thanks!

I am Type 1, so I won't ever be going off of insulin.  Just wanted to wish you luck!  How long have you been off of insulin?  The 7.2 doesn't sound bad at all but the 10.2...not so much

I hope you're able to get it regulated soon and that you are feeling well!

Been off insulin for the last 10 days, not long but I feel so positive about it!  I agree the 10s aren't good, but I'm trying to establish a baseline to discuss with my doctor on the 20th of this month, so we'll know the effects of any tablets, or injections such as byetta, that are added to the mix...

I'm very happy, and am losing weight slightly more quickly now I'm established on Atkins.

Hello there, and thank you for the conversion chart, now US readings will make more sense!  Will be taking my readings back to the doctor on the 20th, so will have a baseline to see what the effects of any new medications will be.

Thank you for the Bernstein reference, I'll certainly look that up.  Will post after the 20th as to what has been added to the mix.

What are your fasting, first thing in the morning blood sugars?  I'm sure you're walking, but if not, that will help alot getting those numbers down.  Congrats on eliminating insulin.  I've been successful in getting off all meds, and it may happen for you also.

At the moment 7.6 to 9.9 first thing.  Too high, but we're establishing a baseline on just metformin to add to on the 20th.  I am walking every day but the weather here has been awful...  I'm certainly hopeful that as the weight continues to come off then the diabetes will improve.

I am now the lightest I've been since 1984!!

Paul, I use to be on insulin, my blood sugar was at 637. Now 100 lbs later, Im on metformin twice a day, at 6.1. Your doing great but are you suppose to be on carbohydrates? It seems it shoots your sugar way up. I may be wrong. I have them once in awhile but not too often. I'm free from surgery 10 years plus. I've only gained back 20lbs but I'm about to get a revision because my neuropathy is bad from the diabetes. I want to be diabetes free when this is over. I use to weight 270lbs lost 100 and gained back approximately 20. But I'm stil 65 lbs overweight.

Thanks for your comments.  My doctor wants me on at least 40 grms of carbs a day!  He might just not get what he wants...  To me, carbs are the enemy.  I see the doctor again on the 20th and we'll see where we go from there.  Good luck with the revision.

Your body DOES require some carbs a day for energy, without them you will become tired and sluggish.  The least amount most recommend are 30-60 Grams per day.  Keep that in mind when you start limiting your carbs, they DO serve a purpose and you DO need some!  Good luck, I am having the same issue as you, I have came off my insulin pump and went on pills and am high after meals and low before them!  Hopefully will find a happy medium soon!
