Struggling with Blood sugar levels

I was so hoping that I wouldnt have to go back on my Insulin pump but I had to.  Dec 2 i went back on the pump as I wasnt able to control my blood sugars with just Lantus.  Last Sunday I woke up to the paramedics at my house.  The kids had to call them as my blood sugar was 38 and I was out of it.  I had been waking up with my sugars that low and had been adjusting my Basal rates, but that morning I just was out of it,  My Endo said we have to just keep monitoring my levels and see what is going to work for me.  Besides my blood sugars I am also at a stall for my weight loss.  With trying to correct the lows and etc,.  I can hardly get in enough protein and water.  I was doing pretty good for awhile and now things are just kinda crazy.  I had posted a few times that I cant stand the protein drinks and have given it time and try them again and I just dont like them.  Oh the life of a Diabetic and WLS patient.  Always fun.  I just want to succeed at my weight loss and improve my overall health.  Like others I am afraid that I wont lose the weight and fail at this too.....

I hated protein powders. So instead of mixing them into 8oz or more of milk or water I made my own shots. 1 scoop of protein into 2 oz of water. wisk up good and chugg down.

Personally I would so much prefer to so my basal rates via pump vs lantus any time.  Yeah, there was quite a bit of adjusting early out for me.  I ran with a higher bg target on my pump, that helped me from over correcting for carbs and corrections.   Talk to your endo and see what s/he thinks about that.

Stalls will come and go. think of the loss as swiss cheese, first you drop the holes, and things have to compress down and will drop holes again.  Fear of failing was a big thing of mine.  Just one moment at a time.

Good Luck

As a RNY and diabetic patient, I sympathize with you. Despite losing weight and exercising, my A1C is still over the acceptable range. My doctor put me on glipizide which immediately caused a slight weight gain...I begged and he took me off.

i love protein shakes however, you must be creative. my favorite protein powder now is lean dessert chocolate fudge. i mix one scoop with 6 oz unsweetened soy milk, 1/4 piece of frozen banana, 6 ice cubes, a bit of ground flaxseed or chia seed or meal, a sprinkle of powdered peanut butter. put in blender, starting on a low speed and work up to a high speed...this makes a large, thick and delicious shake, full of protein and fiber!

let me know how it works out for you.

You sound like me! Glad to know I''m not alone.  The main reason I had this surgery was to hopefully get my blood sugar levels under control....NO SUCH LUCK!  After surgery my levels were 200 or more.....WTH? so they gave me insulin.
Once I got home my levels were 170 or higher....on full liquids!
In the purred stage my levels rose to over 200!  I remain on insulin cause my diabetes doc doesn't want me on pills just yet.
And protein drinks YUCK! I keep trying different ones and have yet to find one that I like.  I'm scared my hair will fall out cause i only average about 30grams a day from my protein drinks.
I'm pray that both of our blood sugar levels will level out and be that of a normal person.  Keep your head up! It has to get better.

Keep trying different protein powders. Order samples from anyone who will send them (About Time, Syntrax Nectar, Vitalady.com, etc.). I promise they don't all taste horrible  :)

Thanks everyone. I have again been trying unflavored whey with a half banana and milk. Sometimes it is ok and other times I still want to gag. I am trying really hard to get 1 or 2 protein drinks a day in. Ugh. I now have my insulin leveled out I think as I have not had any lows in awhile. Was scary for awhile and I think my kids feel better too

I just bought EAS whey protein, vanilla, and it is pretty good.  I found it at Sam's Club, $27.99 for 76 servings.  They had chocolate as well.

My diabetes has come back as well.  They took me off insulin while still in the hospital and I felt great for almost 3 weeks.  Now it has come back with a vegeance.  I am weak and get dizzy when I stand up.  My sugar keeps going over 200 with the little amount I eat.  Even my fasting sugar in the am.  I am so disappointed!

Says your about a month out when you posted this. How is your fluid intake? Rest - are you fighting any sort of infection. All these things will have an effect on your blood sugars.

Also being dehydrnated will make you weak and dizzy when you stand up.

Hope things get better for you.

Thank you.  I am having a hard time getting enough water in and I also have had a sinus infection - I am finally on antibiotics for it. I have been really dizzy when I stand up.
I go back to work tomorrow. I drink a lot more water at work because I am on the phone all day.
