Advice, please
Hi everyone. Prior to surgery I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and was taking Metaformin 500 mg. I have taken nothing since surgery because my sugars have been so good. I've gotten the ok from my PCP and endo to do this. I keep having an "episode" about every other week. For instance today. Today I got up to get something to drink and my heart started beating fast, it felt like the blood rushed to my head, my ears felt like they might pop and my head felt like it was a balloon being inflated. I started to get dizzy and literally started to see black edges to my vision like I was going to pass out. I took my sugar and it was 105. Is this a normal sugar reading? Do you think these spells could be caused by low blood sugar or something else? I asked my PCP about a month ago and she said, welcome to normal BP. I used to have high BP which I no longer do. She said this is normal but it doesn't seem normal to me and it's quite scary. Also, I was told my vitamin D was low at my 3 month vit check and I started taking dry D3. It goes away when I sit down for a few minutes and breathe slowly but why is this happening to me?
Addtl info- I eat 5-6 small meals, have between 800-1000 cals per day, 90 protein per day and take Centrum Complete (2 per day), Bariatric Advantage Chewable Calcium Citrate with D (500 mg 2 per day), Sublingal Spring Valley B-12 (500 mcg daily), Bariatric Advantage Chewable Iron (29 mg 2 per day) and added recently Vitalady Tender D3-50 (50,000 IU 3 times a week).

The symptoms you describe don't sound like they are related to diabetes/glucose levels, especially if your level was 105, which is neither high nor low enough to cause symptoms (unless your body had been used to running with high, like 150+, levels all the time, but if you were only on 500mg metformin daily, I highly doubt that was the case). It sounds to me more like possibly low blood pressure. Maybe you could get a home blood pressure cuff to check your BP when you have this sort of episode?
Another suggestion - have you checked the accuracy of your meter? area where you test your blood sugar? Sometimes readings can fluctuate up to like 10-20% depending on where you get your sample from and if the meter is calibrated. That being said, your number of 105 could be 85. Although not a "low" , for me, 85 and feeling bad is me starting to crash (usually i drop another 20 points if I dont treat).
Just giving you another option to look at. Hope it helps, and I hope all is well with you!

I would have to agree with the low blood pressure or low blood sugar. To me it, I would have to relate it to the decrease in eating. Your body is used to getting the amount needed to satisfy your sugar levels but now it is more than lacking because you are only consuming between 800-1000 per day. It will probably take some time for your body to adjust to the amount you now take in. I hope everything works out.
Hi Kim,
I have a similar problem. Here is an article that you might be interested in
http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa043690 There is a condition that gastric bypass patients can experience where the lows are frequent and very serious. I was a type 2 diabetic who after 3 years has no high blood sugar readings but my low readings are very frightening. I am a Canadian so my lows are 2.1 to 2.6 range. The symptoms are the as you've described.
This occurs between 1.5 and 2 hours after a normal meal. I never go anywhere without glucose tablets and/or portable protein.
