Hi. I am due to have my surgery two weeks from today, that is if the nurses in the Twin Cities don't strike again. I was supposed to have my surgery on the 8th and was cancelled. Anywho, I have very serious pain from diabetic neuropathy and Fibromyalgia. Sometimes it is difficult to differentiate one from the other. However, I was wondering if any of you had severe pain in your feet, shoulders, hips, knees, hands and if your pain improved much after WLS. I am VERY curious about this and am so hoping that I will feel better. Every day has been hell for a while now. So much pain and so exhausting. Help!!!

I have not had neuropathy, but do NSAIDs help with your pain at all? Have you looked into the DS instead of the RNY? With the DS, not only do you have a better chance of type 2 diabetes remission, but you can also take NSAIDS after your surgery.

what kind of blood sugar control do you have now? If its really out of control, I will caution you as sugar control improves pain can increase. WHY? because stuff is healing from being so damaged from the poor sugars before. But when you reach control, and steady for awhile then things can improve. Neuropathy will not go away, but it can get a bit better.

Often when obese, there is a lot of inflamation going on inside the body, that too can cause issues with fibro and what have you. If your able to move more when you start having your weight loss, that will help with the pain. Not all, but i would think that there is hope. For me I don't have the pain in my wrists all the time - I have carpal tunnel, that is more diabetic related than computer use.

Nsaids are a big NO for life after RNY - But they don't help for the type of pain you have. Gosh I know. I'm just lucky that after 25 years being a type 1 - I haven't needed medications for the neuropathy pain I experience from time to time.

Good luck

Hi:
Thanks so much for your reply and helpful info. I never thought of that, about pain increasing after I have had better sugar control. That is exactly what must be going on!!!!!

I had an A1C of 12.6 and gradually, over the last 5 years I have gotten it down to 6.9. I just went from 8.0, tho, to 6.9 which is a BIG leap in sugar control! I also recently quit smoking (4 months and 1 week ago), so after reading your message it occurred to me that this too may be increasing my pain since damaged tissues are now reviving as well.

No, NSAIDS aren't going to be an issue you are correct that they don't help at all for my pain. I take Lyrica, Cymbalta for the fibro and Tramadol and Oxycodone for the neuropathy.

I see the doc tomorrow for the neuropathy in my hands, I will mention this.

Thanks again and congrats!!!!

See if your doctor will prescibe neurontin for your PN. It may also help your fibro. NSAIDs do not even begin to touch this type of pain. So don't even bother with them even if you could take them.

I see you had the VSG.  Are you a diabetic?  If so how are your glucose numbers now?  Do you have neuropathy?  Has surgery helped with this.  When did you have surgery?  I was only offered RNY-Gastric Bypass.  I see Southern Lady has similar concerns and questions.  She lists the same surgeon as yours.  I wish you the best in the coming years.

Hmmmm, confused. I didn't have a VSG??? Where did you see that in my profile?

I am going to have an open RNY on Monday. I'm getting very excited, but also very nervous. I'm hoping that the neuropathy will subdue just a bit.

Thanks for your well wishes!!! I also wish you the best.

My error.  I have no idea why I posted VSG.  Brain fog I guess.  LOL  I meant the RNY as this is what I most likley will have as soon as a date is set.   I wish you all the best and pray your neuopathy will lessen quite a bit after surgery.  I was talking with an RN in another country over the week-end and she claims she has seen neuopathy dramatically improve in time with weight loss surgery and the remiss of diabetes.  I hope she is right!  The WLSurgeon does not know. )-: if it will.  I can dream, can't I?  God Bless Us and heal!

WTG on the quit smoking part. That's why folks sometimes see weight gain when they quit. Go from a "blackend" stressed digestive system then when the smoking stop, things "pink" up and start working better.

In time when the sugars have stabolized at a better range, and the healing - then the pain will or should improve.  Just used to have some folks complain about weight gain when tehir sugars get better, well because they aren't ******g away their calories when spilling sugars all the time when running higher bgs.

Hope you got good info from Dr.
