Type 1 Diabetic going to have RNY
Hi everyone,
I am a Type 1 Diabetic and I am having RNY sometime in July/August. I have met with the surgeon, my nutritionist and my endocrinologist. They are all on board and think it is a good idea for me. I am very excited But, they have all mentioned that I may not lose as quickly as a regular RNY patient because of the insulin I will still have to take. Have any of you other Type
1-ers run into this and noticed that you lose very slowly? I don't mind but I keep reading about all of these people who lose like a pound a day for the first few months and I'm wondering if it is different for Type 1 Diabetics. Any thoughts....

Type 1 diabetic here - let's see droped quickly the first two months, but here i am 10 months out and down 119 pounds. So what if it has slowed down. I was happy reaching under 300 back in november and considered that reaching my goal, all else is a blessing.
are you pumping? no way I could of done it with out my pump.. i loved the fact i could reduce my basals. I created profiles to be 40% less then 60% less.. I went from using about 130-140 units a day to about 45. Thing is your insulin requirements will change, with the change will be the rate of weight loss. yeah sometimes Ih ave to "feed" lows, but just have to make good choices for them. I always start off with some milk, wait and then eat something if additional low support is required. Good luck

YMMV - but post op i changed my target bg to 170 for the first month. I was so worried about having a low blood sugar and not being able to treat it. Not having regular in the body insulin on board, I don't think have had to worry about reactive hypoglycemia - and in a really bad low pinch i have used the glucose drinks - but everyone is different. A friend of mine had lows from her RNY and not be diabetic so she had to use the tabs, I was worried about the sugar, but that hasn't been an issue. Got more q's please feel free to PM me
I had my RNY Dec 10' I' type 1 and on a pump. I have lost 43 pounds my goal was 80. But the good news is my A1C was 7 at my last labs. Also my blood pressure is right on. Did experience several lows but kept tweaking my basil and it does appear to be correct for now. The insulin does slow the weight loss down but everything else is great.
I also am a Type 1 Diabetic and am going to have the gastric sleeve. I am curious why you decided on the RNY. I was scheduled to have surgery at the end of June but chickened out. I am a little nervous because my doctor does not have much experience with type 1. I have also heard of the same thing with slower weight loss. Also my doctor will have me on liquids for two weeks, is your doctor doing the same? I am a little worried about this because of my diabetes. Good luck with everything I hope everything goes well for you.
no I'm not worried about the liquid diet. I have a pump and have dieted eating almost nothing at a few times in my life. I find it easy with a pump. I'm having the RNY mainly becasue my insurance won't cover a sleeve for one and second my surgeon has experience with type 1 diabetics as well as my enod having experience with a few of his patients having successfull BS. Oh I wish I was scheduled already, I can't wait!
my surgeon just referred to my pcp who is internal medicine when it came to the diabetes. and we already worked out basal plans before hand and that worked great for me.
as for the pre op diet, just lowered my basal half way thru the 10 days.. turned out after a bit didnt need the basal as much as I needed before.
