How long it takes to get off insulin and meds?

I am a type 2 diabetic. During the Optifast (liquid) diet I had a brief moment when I didn't take any Metformin or any insulin. Today, 10 days after the surgery I take 2 grams of Metformin per day and 30 units of insulin. Am I going to become insulin and meds independent? When?

There is no way of telling. It depends on how long you've had diabetes, how well (or not) controlled it was, and a little bit of just plain luck. Which procedure did you have? Do give it more time. I was on metformin for almost 6 months after my surgery, but now I'm not on anything at all.

surgery + healing + bodily stress = can all cause insulin needs to be different. Give it some time, test often to keep track of your sugar levels. In time things should improve - for some folks its quicker than others.

Prior to my surgery, I was on  5 shots per day plus 500mg of metformin twice per day.

I came home only on metformin.  After a month, I was cut back to 500mg of metformin a day.

At 5 months out, I am now on no diabetes meds.

My blood sugars were still relatively high (150s to 160s) for the first two weeks after surgery - and it was because of the trauma of the actual surgery.  Like clockwork, at exactly two weeks, I was running in the 80s to 90s fasting.

Now, with no meds I average 80 to 85 fasting.

It all depends on the person though.

It's different for everyone.  I took 15 meds a day post-op, including 2000 mg metformin, actos, lantus, and novalog.  My blood sugars were still high.  I haven't taken anything for diabetes (Type II) post-surgery.  I'm 9 months out and my sugars are normal with diet alone.  98 this morning!
As your weight decreases, you may not have to take any meds.  On the other hand, as you are able to eat more, your sugars may increase.  It's pretty much a crap shoot.  Just  eat the right things when you are eating "normally" again and get that exercise.  That's all we can do.

Although I am really happy about my weight loss, and the fact that my diabetic meds have been reduced, I am a little disappointed that the diabetes is not gone.  I now take 4 metformin a day plus 1 Januvia.  My doc says "Sometimes a diabetic is a diabetic".

It may take time.  After you lose more weight maybe you'll be able to lessen your meds or maybe your diabetes will be put in remission.  Overall when you lose weight your health will get better and you will feel better.    I'm 11 months out and still take metformin and glipizide. I know my blood sugar dropped down to 84 recently - so I just need to have more bloodwork done - and maybe I will be able to drop off some more meds.

Here is my update 7 weeks after Roux-N-Y surgery.
I am not taking Metformin anymore.
I take 18 units of long term insulin twice per day. I would like to thank you all for your support.
