Metformin (Glucophage)

Hi Guys, I was just wondering if any of you experienced "dumping" after switching over to Metformin.  Before RNY I had gone from Metformin to insulin because the Metformin was not working anymore.  Since surgery I have dropped 50 pounds and my PCP suggested I go back on Metformin because the insulin was causing my BS to drop too low.  Before, I was never a dumper...I could tolerate any and everything.  Since changing over, it seems like I'm very sensitive to everything that isn't protein.  I even became nauseous and sick from Green Tea yesterday.  The good news is I've finally started to loose again....but the Metformin is doing a number on my stomach.  And I cannot take the recommended dose of 500 mg 2x a day.  It causes me to have a reaction.  I'm down to only taking one a day.

Metformin is notorious for causing upset stomach issues (including gas and diarrhea) even in those who haven't had WLS. How long has it been since you switched to the metformin? I've seen many people say they get these side effects for the first few weeks, and then they go away once their body adjusts. If the issues persist, I would talk to your doc about switching you to something else. Metformin isn't the only diabetes med out there!

Well, I've already had to cut the dosage in half because it causes my bs to drop too low.  My dr. does not think that I will have to be on them much longer.  My A1C levels have dropped drastically and I'm almost normal!!

One of the reason metformin is so often used is that it does not typically cause lows.

Anyway, great news on the A1C! Careful abuot lows, though, as RNY is known to sometimes cause reactive hypoglycemia even in those who were never diabetic pre-op.

I am pre-op and have been on 500 mg once a day.  I have had the "issues" since day one...every once in a while it will seem to go away for a day or two but then its back.  It oes not seem to be related to what I eat.  But the pluses out way the minuses for me.  I am no longer starving an hour after a meal and am seeing the scale move down with out a herculean effort.  So, I figure I won't be on it for that long (hopefully) and to just live with it.  Hope you can switch or come off soon.

I recently added Metphormin and I had digestion issues for about 2-3 weeks before things settled down. The doctor had warned me about that side effect. So it might not be dumping. Maybe it's just you getting used to the new medicine.
