My A1c is 4.8  I go hypo often.  I have heard that an A1c this low can cause heart problems.  I just wanted to find out how low everyones A1c results have gotten.  Thanks

I AM 2 YEARS AND 4 MONTHS OUT.    I USE TO BE ON INSULIN SHOTS TWICE A DAY AND TAKE PILLS.  MY DIABETES IS DIET AND EXCERCISED CONTROLL..  YAY!!!!!  MY A1C IS NOW 5.8 WHICH IF CONVERTED IS ABOUT 115 ON  AVERAGE. YOUR AVERAGE GLUCOSE READING WOULD BE ABOUT 84 DAILY.

For a NON diabetic normal levels are
Fasting 70 to 99
2 hours after a meal...70 to 139

For someone that HAS diabetes..
Fasting..110 to 180
2 hours after a meal...140 to 235

I highly recommend that even diabetics strive for "normal" numbers, as damage is occuring to your body whenever your levels are above 140, whether they say that's "good for a diabetic" or not.

Since this thread got bumped, and update: home A1C test gave a result of 5.0 at almost 9 months post-op.

I would be less worried about a low A1C and more worried about your hypoglycemia. Are you still on any medications or insulin? RNY has been shown to cause hypoglycemia in many patients, even those who were never diabetic pre-op. I hope you are working with your doc on how to prevent lows.

I am in the process of getting ready for the VSG, it should be in the next 2 months. Anyhow, I just went for more bloodwork today. No results just yet, but 5 months ago my A1C was 11.6 I take avandamet 2 times a day but my sugars are not going down. I spoke with my primary doctor about this today and he didnt  seem worried. However, I am! Recently my sugar has gone as high as 415 everything got blurry, my head was hurting so bad, and I was very dizzy. My trip to the ER resorted in getting an insulin injection. I wondering if maybe I should atleast be on a sliding scale or something.

I'm praying that once I have the WLS that my sugars as well as my blood pressure will return to normal.

Is there something that I should be demanding of my primary doctor right now or is he just waiting for the results of my labs? HELP!!!!!!!!

With type 2 diabetes, have you researched the DS? It has the highest rate of diabetes resolution of ANY of the available WLS procedures.

Meanwhile, are you eating low carb? You need to get your sugars under control before surgery if at all possible, as higher blood glocose levels can slow healing and put unnecessary additional strain on your body. I've never been on anything other than metformin and Januvia (sitagliptin), so I can't offer much in the way of advice or suggestions for medications, but a very low carb diet has given me the best results of anything when it comes to controling my glucose levels.
