Discouraged

I'm so very discouraged.  I had surgery July 22nd and my diabetes is worse than ever.  Pre surgery I was on Lantus and Actos and my BS's were all within relative normal range . . . A1C was 7.0.  Now I've been running in the high 300's and am on Lantus, Humulog, and Actos.  Nothing is bringing it down past the 200's.  I'm discouraged, angry, and scared.

What are you eating and/or drinking? Maybe you have some type of infection? Maybe its just insulin resistance and you need a different type? What has your endocrinologist suggested? How about a thyroid test? I know my sugars were totatlly whacky when my thyroid was off.

Drinking water and crystal light.  I think my eating is fine.  No pasta, rice, etc.  Minimal carbs.  Mostly protein and veggies.  Now I'm afraid to eat anything.  The doc did a complete metabolic panel, so I'm not sure if that included thyroid..  I'm now on Humalog sliding scale and Lantus 20 units, and Actos.

Throid is not part of the Comp. Metabolic Panel. It's separate, so unless your doc ordered a thyroid panel, or at least TSH, you won't know. Make sure you get a copy of your lab results so you can see exactly what your numbers are. Many docs will say your thyroid is "fine" when it is outside the new limits--which they don't know about. FYI, anything past 3.5 or so is regarded as hypothyroid, whereas it used to be anything over 5.0. Personally, I feel like crud if my TSH is past 1.4 or so.

I've been having blood sugar issues due to menstrual hormonal fluctuations. Any possibility this problem fluctuates with your cycle?

Hope you find a solution soon, and don't give up.

Jan,

Thank you. I am getting excited.  I know when my thyroid went out the first time, it sent my sugars into the stratosphere for no reason what so ever! The second time it was less so, but still elevated them.

Occasionally artificial sweetners can do the same thing. Maybe try to get some stevia and make your own iced tea, etc. You could just be having a reaction to increased use of artificial sweetner?

If you're really keeping your carbs that limited, then, IMO, something is wrong. I would pester your do****il you got an answer, or find a doc who is willing to find out what's happening here.

Most often we never think about the glucose available in meat because its so limited.  But for some folks when they take their insulin they have have to use the tag method.

Total Available Glucose - and figure out their insulin to carb ratio.   I am finding that I am needing some insulin for the small amount of protien I'm having sans carbs. SOmetimes its just a half unit (I'm on the pump so its easy to do)

A hba1c of 7% is good, but its best to even have it under 7 for diabetics. Personally I never get there, but strive for it.  Will see where my hba1c in a couple months.

Are you drinking enough?  If youdon't have enough water on board, your sugars can go high. I know summer time for me is the worse because any slight dehydration my sugars go up.  So I know days that my fluid intake is poor, my sugars really show it.

Some folks can't handle just taking lantus once aday but  have to split that up - but talk to your doctor about that..

There are so many things in our lives that can have an effect on blood  sugars, its really hard to say what can be causing it.

Hope your feeling better soon, and getting a handle on the sticky fingered kid - called diabetes

I'm sorry to hear about this!  It must be so frustrating!!  I hope your blood work gives you some answers.  Let me know what you find out.  How's your weight loss coming so far?

My other question is are you on any medications that affect your blood glucose like steroids or other things??? Does it seem like your body is still stressed or not feeling well.  That always causes my blood sugar to rise.  And as fustrating as it is, try not to get discouraged. Your body feels this, and can be affected by this also.  Work hard, drink your fluids-as much as you can, follow your diet, and control the only thing you can right now: your attitude.  I have learned recently that this is all I have control over, and it is amazing how much better you feel when you have control over your attitude.  Good luck, and definately contact your endo or CDE.
Thanks for reading!
