But only fat people get diabetes!?! (Kind of a rant)

My sister just found out she has diabetes and high blood pressure.  No big surprise.  Everyone in my family has diabetes and high blood pressure.  The first words out of her mouth.....But I'm not FAT. Only FAT people get diabetes and high blood pressure.  (She weighs about 120 soaking wet.)  Well, sorry to break the news to you sis, but if you have a genetic disposition for diabetes and high blood pressure, and all you eat are mayo soaked steak subs, chocolate bars and Mt. Dew, you are putting yourself at risk no matter what your weight.  Sorry.  The only difference between us is that I'm prone to FAT and you are not.  It just rubbed me the wrong way.  I don't eat chocolate bars and Mt. Dew...though I did have the occasional steak sub.  Thinking you can eat anything because you're thin and it won't hurt you someday down the road is just, well, stupid.  Slim doesn't always equal healthy.

Unfortunately, most people share her perspective on type 2 diabetes. It's annoying. Yes, being fat increases your RISK of diabetes, but it's not a prerequisite!

Same here. I was diagnosed when I was a slim 15 year old, but now that I'm the fat Grandma, everyone assumes I have Type 2 diabetes. At the WLS seminar I went to the surgeon kept insisting that my diabetes will "simply go away". Well, that's not gonna happen! I'm sure it will improve after I have my surgery, but I'll always have to take my Insulin and count my carbs.

I know what you mean. I've had to insist to doctors (not my wonderful endo!) that yes, I am type 1, and I've had the c-peptide test to prove it. That usually shuts them up, but not always.

Nice thing about the DS is that it has really, really, really reduced my insulin resistance. So glad! My sugars are soo much more stable now.

My name is Ashley and i had type 1 diabetes since  i was ten years old i am considering doing the lapbend because bypass is really risky anyways i am still going to take insuline. I have a question regarding when first you do any kind of surgery for weight loss did you take insuline when you were on liquid diet or the for the those protein shakes how did you handle your insuline dosages.

I'm on a pump, so I kept my pump on my usual basal rate, and took insulin for any carbs in the shakes. Also, not every surgeon requires a liquid diet pre-op.

If you're talking about doing shakes post-op, the same rules apply.

Are you on a pump, or do you do injections? If you do injections, you may be able to get away with taking a reduced level of Lantus and injecting Humalog PRN, but you would need to talk to your endo. If you happen to be in the Washington, DC area or in the Nashville area, I can suggest some great endos.

The easiest way to lose weight as a diabetic is to eat tons of sweets!  It wrecks your body but you will be thin.  Daisy
