Surgery July 14 - Diabetes controlled with no meds
Glucose level under 117 since home from surgery. No novalog. No lantus. No metformin. No actos. None. Off all diabetes meds and have a normal glucose reading. Wow. Cut all but 3 of 15 meds already! Only need one blood pressure pill, thyroid pill, and one anti-anxiety pill. This is the reason I finally had the surgery. I am soooo happy. Surgery went great. Hardly any pain. I feel great..
i don't want to burst your bubble because I know how good it felt to get rid of my insulin pump and off Glucovance after one week of surgery BUT, my blood sugars crept right back up after a couple of weeks...about the time I started eating soft foods. The endo put me on Januvia and it didn't do anything so now they have me trying Amaryl. I pray your levels stay fabulous but just keep testing!
I understand that that may happen. I've decided to go with Lantus only in that case. I think it will eventually work itself out in the long term as the weight goes down. I'm hoping anyway. Presurgery my numbers were really really good and I wasn't on a liquid diet - just 1200 cal, low carb. Thanks for the heads up. Good luck to you!
That is awesome!!!! Good for you and good luck in continued success in that area!! I am off my Januvia, and went to regular metfromin vs. metformin ER and a smaller does as well.
Now if I could just figure out how to swallow that dang metformin. That pill even in the non ER formula is huge!!! And I have tried cutting them in quarterts to boot. I have to admit, I ahve been very bad in the taking of the big meds.....and I really need to work on that.
I too was hoping to be off all my diabetes meds by now, but they certainly have decreased....at least amount wise!!! If only now I could take them!!!

On the road to a whole new me and a shopping spree!!!

You can get the metformin in a liquid. That's what they sent me home with. I was taking glybride, byetta and metformin all twice a day before surgery. They gave me insulin in the hospital the first two days. Then late on the 2nd day my BS was below 150. So they gave me nothing. Mine has been running upper 80s to around 116 with a couple higher (145 and 130). So I have not had to take any of the liquid metformin, and I'm hoping that wont change. But we'll see after I'm off the full liquid diet.
Congrats on your glucose readings. The same thing happened to me. I stopped taking my diabetes meds during my liquid diet because my readings were no higher than 140. Since surgery my levels have been between 90 - 108. My doctor said to keep testing and as long as it stays low I will not need any diabetes meds. My blood pressure did the same. It averages 115/72. SO am off all of my meds unless these counts change as well. As for my cholesterol meds, I am off of them too but only a blood test will tell if I need them. So the doctor said we will test in October and then make a decision.
It is exciting not to need anything now even if our body adjusts to our new life style and we need to take meds later we will still have our new body!
