Am I hypoglycemic???

I hope some of you can help me.  I've been having episodes that I thought may have been caused by my blood pressure meds.  Usually when it happens I'm not at home, but yesterday I was.  I started shaking, feeling really weak, jittery and nervous, just basically felt like I was going to come right out of my skin and pass out.  My husband is diabetic and told me to check my blood sugar with his monitor so I did and it was 64.  I was fixing lunch when it happened and he told me to just hurry up and eat some mashed potatoes.  I did and about 15 minutes later I started slowly feeling better.  One of my points is this...am I also confusing what I think is dumping syndrome with symptoms of low or high blood sugar?  Sometimes after I eat my heart races and I get really nervous and hot in my face.  So is that dumping or is my sugar spiking?  I'm so confused right now.  I've had symptoms of low blood sugar for a long time but in the past everytime I've ever checked it my sugar has been perfect.  I would really appreciate any info that any of you can give me.  I need all the help I can get right now.  I do know a lot about type 2 diabetes because of my husband and I've been to diabetic nutrition classes with him, but neither of us know anything about low sugar and rny gastric bypass.

Hello Jill,
I would suggest you talk with your doctor about what is happening.
it could be Low Blood sugar alot of us who have had the surger do end up with these episodes. but then again it sounds like dumping too.
I'm over 5 years out and still can dump at different times. No ryme or reason to it! sure if i had eaten something high in sugar or too much or maybe even a pieceof turkey that is too dry i'll dump. never fun!
but in the past year i've had low blood sugar and that is NO fun at all! it got nasty. i'm going to a haturalist doctor who has done wonders for me. i'm feeling the best that i have in a year.
hypoglisimic (please forgive my spelling) is similar to diatiebes and can go into type 2.
with this you can control it with diet. good carbs only. which means no white potatoes! i have to eat every 2 to 3 hours. at first when i started with my episodes i was eating every 20 minutes or would shake so bad and felt like i was going to pass out. along with other symptoms like depression, confusion, aches and pains and mega headache. once i would eat the symptons would fade and pass. but if i ate the wrong things like processed sugar they would pass but come back with a vengence.
with LBS its all about the diet.
you add that into being again I'll say over 5years out fromsurgery and having a mega fear of gaining weight arggggggggg NOT FUN.
I've put on about 10 pounds in the past year from this. Now that it is semi under control I'm able to lose but its so slow.
plus i need to excersize daily. that all helps it too.
there are alot on the web about it but again i strongly suggest you talk to your surgeon. he would be the best person to ask and do some tests.
good luck and god bless, pam

Hey Jill,
I am also having trouble differentiating between low blood sugar and dumping. For me the symptoms are the same. It is confusing, because when my sugar is low I am supposed to have glucose or sugar which makes me also  feel terrible.

I am newly diagnosed, and I have a lot to learn.  I think for me, dumping happens very soon after eating and the low sugar a couple of hours. I do not have a meter so it is hard for me to be sure.

I had my RNY almost three years ago. I haven't been on OH in a year at least, but I decided to see if I could find hypoglycemia help.

I notice you are from Hot Springs. I live in Georgia now, but I am originally from Blytheville.

You two have described me to a "T"! I thought I was going insane. My doctor dosent understand what is going on and I have been testing my blood and he is sending me for tests. My sugar one night was 32! After going to bed and it being normal. I don't even remember parts of that episode. If my husband didn't wake me up, I might have been in a sugar induced coma! I now have something for my doctor to go on and I am going to do research myself right now! Thank you both!

I havent been here in a bit. But wanted to follow up on this. I went to my doctor and  he sent me to an endocrinologist.  He did a lot of testing on me and the results were I am a Severe Hypoglycemic.  He explained to me what happens to us in our 4th to 5th years out is our bodies start breaking down carbs in our intestines way too fast and the pancreas reacts causing a rush of insulin, our sugar spikes and then plumets.  When the sugar is low we have to eat, thus here comes the weight gain! So he put me on a medication that slows the absorbtion of the carbs Acarbose and it has worked wonders! That and I am back to starting a healthy lifestyle.  I had become way to lax and took the 5 year maintenance for grantid. So now I have a long way home! Although everyone says I look better at this weight 187.2 I am a size 12/13.  I was at my lightest 155-158 and a size 9/10.  I felt so much better there. So I am torn. I think I would like to try 165 and see how I feel there. Anyway, please don't think it is just dumping people. Have yourself checked out just to be sure. I suffered for a long time and came close to tragedy. Now yes I have to live a life of sugar testing a couple times a day and a medication and watching what I eat as if I was diabetic, but face it, I was suppose to be careful all this time anyway.  good luck to all.
