RNY and kidney problems

I'm scheduled to have my RNY surgery August 3.  I'm pretty sure I'm a type I, insulin dependent, takes five pills a day for High blood pressure, simvastatin and fish oil caps for cholesterol (which is under control).  I have been to a kidney doctor and have been told my kidneys are only working 31 or 41% (can't remember which) and to keep my blood sugars and blood pressure under strict control.  They don't put you on dialysis until you reach 15%.  I'm hoping I will be able to get off most of my meds and become healthier, and live.  My question is this - does anyone else on this forum have kidney problems?  Will the large amounts of protein daily just aggravate my condition and make my kidneys worse??  Any help is greatly appreciated.  thanks,  Becky

I am NOT an expert on kidney issues, but have you researched the DS procedure at all? (you would have to find a surgeon who does it for true information, as your does not)

The DS has the highest resolution rates for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes (among other major comorbidities).

It requires eating more protein, but that is because some of the protein you eat is not absorbed, which means not all the protein you eat ever reches your kidneys.

It might be worth a conversation (via emai or phone) with Dr. Husted in KY, Dr. Rabkin in CA, or Dr. Elariny in VA (these are NOT the only DS surgeons in the US, but they are among the most experienced, so I would think they would know more about the procedure in relation to kidneys).

Thanks for this info, Jill.  I'll check into it and see what I can find.

Good luck with your surgery.  I have had impaired kidney function for several years--working at about 30%.  The protein part of the diet was not a problem, according to my kidney doctor.  Also, my kidney function has improved (creatinine down to 1.4) since surgery last October.

Thank you shelto1946.  I hope my kidney function improves also.  I've had some nasty side effects of my diabetes, hopefully everything will improve and I'll extend my life.

i asked my surgeon what type of damage can i possibly be doing to my kidneys with massive weight loss, and eating all the higher protien diets.

He said that folks that are about to head to dialysis can have the surgery - and then actually have improved kidney function.

With the weight loss you will no longer be putting weight and pressure on the kidneys - so they will be better.

I thought that "filtering" the fat and waste that it could potentially harm my kidneys and he said no.

Did you ask your doctor?  that would be my suggestion.

Thank you Mishelle.  I'm hoping it will improve my kidney function.  I'll ask my dr. for more info when I see him on July 21.

Obesity leading to diabetes can create kidney problems. Its because of hypertension cause by diabetes, its because the blood protein albumin begin to leak into their urine. You should ask a doctor about it, they will definitely give you special diet program.
