Hi, I am new to this board, so forgive me if this question has been posted before...

How do you get through the liquid diet stage?  It seems like all the protein drinks are really high in sugar. Won't this make by glucose levels rise?

I have tried the slim fast low carb and atkins pre-mixed shakes. Will that give me enough nutrition?

Which brands did you use? Were they good tasting?  I am to be on liquids 2 weeks pre-op and post op, and want something that tastes good if possible.

I haven't had any trouble finding low-carb protein drinks. If you are looking for pre-mixed ones, I recommend EAS Carb AdvantEdge (sold at Walmart and most grocery stores). They come in packs of 4, and I like the chocolate ones (the regular chocolate, not the dark chocolate - just my preference).

If you're looking for a protein powder to mix yourself, EAS also makes powders.

I tried both the Slim Fast and the Atkins pre-made shakes, and I didn't like either one.

I tried the EAS and it made my tummy hurt.   I didn't like the Slimfast either. Atkins was ok.   I guesss I just need to experiment.

I found that the Body Fortress Whey Protein from Walmart (14.99) works well for me, no low or high sugars.  I only use one scoop and it has 2 g of sugar and 3 g of carbs while the protein is 25 g.  I also like the Syntrak Nectar (25.99) it has 0 sugars and 0 carbs.  The protein count is 23 g, they have great flavors I have fuzzy navel and strawberry kiwi.  You have to order it I get mine from http://advantagesupplements.com/.  Seems to be the best price.  Hope this helps.

For my liquid diet stage, I had the Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast 3-5 times a day. S/F jello's, S/F popsicles, S/F fudgsicles, broth (but couldn't drink that) tried it and dumped it out! Gross!!! I had to be on the liquid diet stage for 2 loonnng weeekkkks! I did have tomato soup twice, til the dr's office said no more. I did snack a small piece of deli turkey at night, otherwise I don't think I would of made it cause I was starving!!!!! I made it to surgery down 13lbs. and now I am almost 5 months post-op.   Good luck to you.

I just started liquid protein diet today, surgery is in 2 weeks.  I bought Bariatric Advantage from my surgeon's office, but you can buy it online.  It's a meal replacement shake that has only 1 g of sugar, 135 calories, 27 g of protein and 135 calories per serving.   I'm supposed to have 4-5 servings per day.  I'm rather hungry though!

I've worked with bariatric patients and surgeons the past ten years and we've tried a number of things to help people through these phases.  The absolute best thing we've tried, that was satisfying to the patient and that produced great results was working with a group called Weight by Design.  They have a person there that works with patients and has done some amazing things with them. Type 2 diabetics have even gotten off some meds before surgery, and others have decided to delay surgery because of the good results.  The shakes they use taste great, have high nutritional value, and are FDA-reviewed and approved.

Bobbie is the advisor/coach.  You can find her at rightweigh.com, but go to the Weight by Design section in non-surgical programs.  Let me know if you have questions.

Skim milk, broth, modified and low-calorie liquids with high protein such as Ensure, Boost, Crystal Light, and so forth. Also try Soft, pureed foods; foods with no pieces in paste form.
