I had my RNY surgery this past three days ago and came home from the hospital last night. Prior to surgery, I was taking Lantus, Novalog, Byetta, Metformin and Actos. I am now down to Metformin only and my blood sugars are lower than pre-surgery. I'm hoping that things will improve further once I get some weight off.

That is the same reason I had the surgery - it's to soon for me to tell you I'm rid of it . I had the surgery April 12, 2009 and saw my primary a week later - we both agreed to discontinue my meds - because they were making me feel so ill ! We agreed that I would check my sugars every day - and so far they have usually been about 120 - 140, 180 a couple of times but it's been after exercising. So it's not cured but I'm off the meds for now !! My primary anticipates I'll be off for good - I hope so !!

Sorry I forgot in my last post - I was taking 850 milligrams 3 times a day - so down to nothing and having my sugars this low - well for me - it's successful so far !!

I saw my endocrinologist for my 6 month post-op check yesterday.  He sent me home from the hospital on no diabetic medications.  My sugars still ran kind of high the first couple months but have slowly been coming down without needing any medication.  Yesterday he discharged me from his care and labeled me a "background diabetic" meaning if I regain weight the diabetes can come back, but right now I'm not considered diabetic.

I had type II for over 10 yrs, and this was the big motivating factor for me, as I was obese and it was harder and harder to maintain good control.  I felt I was moving to insulin dependence, and I also felt awful all the time--like I was encased in a fog.

I had RNY on Wednesday, October 22, 2008.  On Friday, before discharge, my finger stick was 130.  I have not needed diabetes medication since, and I am now about 8 months out.  My sugars seem to have normalized almost immediately.  My A1c is now 6.1.  My triglycerides, which at one time were over 1000, are now 170.  All other blood lipids are normal.

No one can guarantee that RNY will have such a fast impact, but certainly you should be helped by the weight loss at the very least.

All the very best to you in your journey.

I had my RNY because of my diabetes. I was getting so sick from the meds I stopped taking them, and my levels were running sometimes the 500's. I started taking 60 units of Lantis during my preop diet and stopped 2 days before surgery with a normal level. I was given some Lantis in the hospital and took it 3-4 times since surgery. It's been at least 3 weeks since I have used any and my levels are running 120-140. I recommend the surgery highly to anyone who is looking to control their diabetes. My weight loss has been slow but I feel 110% better. Good Luck.
