I posted this on the main board not realizing there was this forum. Here's my rant and a little extra.

So as some of you know I've been on the fence about surgery...falling into the insurances' trap it seems. Well last week I had another reason to have the surgery. My prediabetic self is most likely officially diabetic. Got a new med added to my med ****tail and I hear it can make you gain weight...at least that's what the doc said. It's glucotrol XL. so yeah...I've lost 15lbs during my supervised weight loss and now with only like a month or so to go, just waiting on the cpap crap, I may actually gain weight back. not only does this upset me because of my weight loss, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of the med? I mean is it the drug company's way of keeping you drug dependent? if you're overweight you can develop diabetes. I'm overweight and this is what happened. I'm trying to do something to change it, but needed a little help med wise and now this pill that's supposed to help could reverse the work I've put in and make me gain weight whi*****reases your diabetes problems?

am I the only one that sees this? ugh!

So diabetes wise I am on metformin 1000mgs and now the glucotrol xl 5mgs. I'm also on a whole list of other meds for mental stuff and heart stuff. some of which also increase blood sugar levels. I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle here.

I get you. Check in with your surgeon's nurse and ask her to note on your chart that you are starting this new med and you are concerned about gaining back what you have lost. ask her to document your current weight and the date you start the glucotol so if you gain everyone will know why.I think you can overcome this just hang in there! Good luck!

I hope you have researched the DS as an option and not just the RNY, as the DS has the highest rate of type 2 diabetes resolution of any WLS currently performed in the US.

As for the meds, some diabetes meds can help you lose weight (for example, metformin and Byetta). Others cause some weight gain. I don't think that particular aspect is any sort of conspiracy - just a crappy side effect! But, hopefully, you will be off the diabetes meds after your surgery anyway!

I started on Glucotrol XL 5mg 11 years ago. I stayed the same did not gain weight. I gained a lot of weight when I went on Lantus and Novolog. I ballooned 20 pounds in 12 weeks. I am still trying to loose those damn 20 pounds.

Document when you started taking this new med. There is Amaryl which is good. Also you can take Glucophage excellent med but if you cannot tolerate may god help you.
