taking pills post-RnY

Hi. Apparently, I'm one of those whose diabetes wasn't "cured" by RnY. I'm 7 months post-op, and my glucose readings are worse than before surgery. So, I'm going to call my PCP and get back on medication. Obviously, I'm Type II.

Currently, I only inject a small amount of Lantus at night, if my reading is over 170, which it always is. Pre-surgery, I took 2000mg Glucophage XR (or XL?) and injected Byetta. I refuse to take anything that is known to cause weight gain, so I'm thinking about asking to go back on just Glucophage for now and see what happens.

For those who take Glucophage (Metformin), are you able to swallow the pills whole, and do you still take the extended release? I've read that RnYers shouldn't take extended release pills, but the non-extended release Metformin is know to be harsh on stomachs. Has anyone had any problems?

Do any RnYers take Precose? Do any use Byetta?

I'm so unsure about what to do and am wondering if I should go to an endo instead of my PCP?

Thank you,

Melissa

HI,

I'm in the same boat.... my readings are higher than pre...

Did you have polysystic ovarion syndrome PCOS??

or did you have preeclampsia or toxemia if you were pregnant.

There has to be something in our bodies.....  I know my hormoes changed alot since surgery.

I too, will be doing back on insulin..

Hi. I have no idea if I had/have PCOS. I'm still trying to find information about why time-release medications aren't good for RnYers. It would be great if good ol' metformin would help and I could stop the insulin.

Time released medications aren't a good choice because, due to the alterratios of your stomach and intestine, the medicine goes through your system much quicker, which means less of the slow-released medicine will be absorbed.

I also have unimproved type 2 diabetes even after 165 lb weight loss.  I went back on metformin (not time-released).  My endo was cautious -- I started wtih only 250 mg / day.  He trusted me to increase as tolerated back up to 2000 mg / day.  Be sure to take it with food.  I have no intestinal problems with it now.

I also refulse to take Actos or other known weight-gain drugs for my diabetes, so we're doing the best we can right now.  My docs all know how hard I've worked to get this far and are very understanding about my concerns.

Good luck!
