incipient diabetic nephropathy?

I have not had revision yet. I had stomach stapling Feb 1992. I gained back some weight. 33-35 pounds.. Was close to 400 and down to 245 now. I never really lost all the weight I wanted too. I recently found out my staple line opened up and the band they use also opened up...So my surgery failed me I was told...
I have type 2 dibetes. I found out today that I have incipient diabetic nephropathy. How bad is that?? What is that? I am upset and angry! Number should be below 30 and mine is 135!! I go for my first visit to see my new surgeon This Friday. Will he refuse to do surgery on me until my blood sugars get under control???

I hear of so many folks here, who's diabetes goes a way for a time, maybe up to a year even.. then for no reason at all! No weight gain, no eating carbs and such...BAM!! They have diabetes again. What are the chances of Diabetes coming back for WLS folks? Thank you for any help...Alizka

The chances of your diabetes coming back after surgery are much lower if you have the DS instead of the RNY. Please check out the studies in my profile.

But no surgery will cure your diabetes if you're no longer producing insulin on your own, so you might want to have that checked.

Hi Jill,
I need to be careful as my Father and over half his family died from complications due to diabetes.. He was only in his 60's. I will see if they can check to see if I still produce insulin. Thank you for your reply. Alizka

Incipient diabetice nephropathy is the early stages of diabetic kidney disease.  As the disease progresses, urine albumin levels increase until the patient develops "overt nephropathy"  (defined as more than 300mg per 24hrs or more than 200mcg per minute).   I was diagnosed 1 1/2yrs ago and my endocrinologist put me on an ACE inhibitor (very low dose of high blood pressure medication) even though I don't have high blood pressure.  He stated it's been proved to help reduce the albumin excretion rate.  Note - he's also the one *****commended the idea of having gastric bypass surgery to hopefully reverse my diabetes which would in turn stop or delay at the very least my diabetic nephropathy from progressing.
I was upset and angry too but be soooo thankful that is was found now as this is a silent enemy that most people don't know about till it's too late to do anything about it.
Congratulations also for losing so much weight and for continuing to pursue weight loss!

Hi Lisa,
Thank you so much for all the great information! I really appreciate your help. I feel relaxed now that I know a little more about it.

I went to my PCP on Monday, and she did exactly what you said! about putting me on high blood pressure medicine. I was upset at first, because my BP was only 120/70. She told me it would helps me with protein in my urine.
I got a surgery date!!!! Find out yesterday I was approved.  I am so happy!

Thank you so very much for your help. Alizka

I've heard some people are toting gastric sleeve surgery as a 'cure" for diabetes. Quite honestly, I believe that is crap. You can become a diet controlled diabetic via WLS but I believe once diabetic you are always diabetic and if you gain the weight back, your diabetes will come right back with it.

Hi Shirley,

I do totally agree with you! Once a diabetic you are always one! I had been a diabetic years ago for just a about a year only ..then I lost weight and was not one. Then gained weight back, became one again. I Did it at least twice! I sure Pray I can keep my weight off this time after I have my surgery!!

Did you notice??? I got a date!!! I just got it yesterday. I am so happy! My Surgeon was not sure I'd be approved!!

I was approved with the first letter. YEA!! I'm Praying I can have it sooner. I leave for Hungary early June!! I need to be healed. Thanks for your reply. Alizka

I know what you mean.  It's nice have this "break" but I am sure that DM2 will come back if I gain weight again.  WLS just gave me a tool to help me get my weight under control but I don't believe the DM2 is gone, just under control.
