I can only speak from my own experience and those I've read of on a diabetes forum (not here on OH). For most type 2s, the amount of carbs they will tell you you can have in an educational seminar will be too much (unless you are on insulin and can adjust the amout to cover your carbs). I do best when I stick to about 50 grams of carbs per day. Most others I've talked to find 100 grams or less okay. It really depends on your own body and tolerance.

When I was diagnosed, my doc told me to get a meter and test my blood glucose level twice a day. HA! I've found the best way to really know what you can or cannot handle is to test WAY more than that at first. For a few weeks, I would test first thing in the morning (fasting) and then 60, 90, and 120 minutes after everything I ate. That gave me the best idea of which foods affected me and which foods were better for me.

Everyone is different. I see some type 2s have Cheerios or oatmeal for breakfast every morning. Both of those spike my glucose over 200, so I avoid them. But I wouldn't have known this without testing frequently.

I recommend www.diabetesforums.com for more info on diabetes.

Thanks, Jill. That gives me a bit more to go on. I'll check out that forum. I think I have it on my list and just haven't had time to check it out.

Thanks again

The nutritionist told me to have 40gr carbohydrate w meals.  Also use the glycemic index.....pineapples bad. apples good,,,also check out glycemic loads, because that takes a serving into consideration and is more accurate per my nutritionist.  Everyone is right, you need to check multiple times to see what affects you.  Oatmeal is supposed to be good for you, but unless I had a lot of walking or work after breakfast to burn it off, my blood sugar would jump up.  Also anytime you eat a carbohydrate, be sure and have some protein, it helps keeping your sugar from spiking.
