I have been a diabetic since 2002 and was recently placed on insulin one time per day. My dilima is that now that I am in the early stages of the WLS process, I ahve begun to exercise to lose my per-surgery weight.  Well, I am having a problem followinmg my 1200 calorie eating program with no snacks and 3 meals a day, because I am experiencing lows during the day, causing me to have to pop sweets to bring it back up.  I go for lifstyle classes soon tog et help, but does anyone have any suggestions now.

3 meals a day with no snacks is typically not a good idea for a diabetic. You need to aim for cinsistency, which means eating about every 2-3 hours throughout the day.

Did you doc tell you to only eat 3 times a day, or is that your own plan for losing weight? If your doc sugegsted it, I would call him/her and explain what's happening. Otherwise, you can still take in 1200 calories a day, just spread it out more, like 3 300-calorie meals and 3 100-calorie snacks.

If you are regular in your routine, you can ask you doctor about lowering your insulin dose.

I have heard many people split those 3 meals into 4 or 6 snaller ones. Honestly, after surgery, you'll probably need more than 3 small meals, as many of us get hungry before the next meal is due. But, consult your docs before you do anything. They may need to adjust your meds. Also, maybe you need some juice or a small snack during or after exercising...but the doc can tell you what would be good for you! Good luck with everything!

Hugs, Heather

Thanks you allk for all or your posts and advice.  I go to a Bariatric Lifestyle class at the end of the month and I will ask this question specifically to get so meal suggestions.  If that doesn't work, then I will ask my Dr.  I am trying hard to do what the program requires, but I think they should have devised one for the diabetic patient and only 3 meals a day is not realistic for us.  I've tried it.  My surgeon says lose the 15 lbs or don't get the surgery.  I'm kinda bumbed about it, but I am in it for the long run.  Thanks again everyone.
